H-4895 in 204 Ruger

Been Trying H-4895 w/ 40 V-Max. Max Load Listed at 27.7 grains @ 3741, Have Tried 27.5 to 27.7 grains Getting 3999 fps to 4025 fps out of 26"Criterion Match Barrel, Barrel Has 2,302 Rounds on it. Never Ever Thought I would get 4000 + fps,out of 204 ruger. This is out of 2 different lots of powder. Have Not figured Out Why ? got up to 4025 on 85 degree day to 4018 on 64 degree day.Using Fed205M & Rem 7 1/2 primers DogTown[New] & Older Nosler cases, got 3976 fps out of Hornady case w/ 27.5 grains. Anyone had loads 300 fps faster than Listed ??

Hodgdon's data are from a 24" barrel. Your extra 2" could reasonably account for an additional 70 fps. The rest is YMMV. Did you stop at 27.7 grs? How do you clock velocity? How do you evaluate pressure signs? How much bullet jump if any? Etc.

PS your statement suggests you have started only 0.2 grs below book max load. Is that your usual practice?

not 300 but about 200+. different components but here is what i finally figured out. i was +2" on bbl length, i was loading close to touch (most data is given at 2.260 i was 2.400 +/-) and most importantly i think my bbl was hard carbon fouled.

i was loading 39 tnt's and even talked to speer tech support about the speed. i forget which powder but i remember their words... "wow, fast bbl".

BUT now that i have modified my teslong mirror tube to work in 20 cal bore and finally got the neglected bore mostly clean (along with some more jump) the velocities came back more in line with several published loads.

A look in QL without customizing for all your specifics would suggest it takes around 73K PSI (vs SAAMI max of 58.7K PSI) to get a 40 gr bullet going that fast.

I shoot several 20 cal's, and anytime I see folks running much above 3750 are running pressures in excess of what things were designed for. Your equipment, your decision.

I am currently running H4895 in a .223, a 6BR, a couple 6.5 Grendels, and a .308 Win all with excellent results and better speeds than advertised in the load manuals. I love the stuff.

at 27.7 grains Fed205m primers were a little flat, Zero pressure signs, Zero marks/swipes,Still easy bolt lift, Mic',ed Cases, normal case expansion & headspace. jumping bullets .070, have tried New Dog Town brass[made by Nosler}, multiple time fired, Nosler, Norma,Hornady w/wrs,Fed205m & Rem 7 1/2 primers, getting fastest velocity's w/ Federals

Well have fun, while it lasts Varget204, but when you say primers are a little flat, but also say no pressure signs, I feel you are playing with dynamite and it will cost you, one of these trigger pulls. But that is your choice. I just hope you or anyone near by gets hurt.
