H-4198

I thought I would share a response from Hodgdon, on H-4198. So if you have H-4198 hang on until its gone.

I am sorry but this particular burn speed is not currently in production. Increased military demand for materials worldwide is affecting production of certain products including this one.

That’s dumb. I get it but it‘s still dumb. I have a little over 16 pounds left, hopefully something changes in the meantime.

I wasn’t going to comment, but……..I see a lot of folks losing favor with Hodgdon. If I burned the powder I did 30 years ago, I would have already moved on.
I now have 2lbs of H4198, I will only use it compare against other powders now.
I believe one may see differences with bore sizes when comparing against others

I'm with you on your assignment on Hodgdon powder.

What are y'all using as H4198 alternatives?
For the cartridges and bore size that I use H4198, IMR4198 is as close to a load to load alternative I have found.
The IMR longer sticks are a pita, accuracy is acceptable but not as good as the H.

Case fill and accuracy is what I was after with numerous cartridges.

I keep seeing folks mention a powder as a replacement, no, they just worked up a different load completely and the powder does not have the “window” of use I am looking for.

My guess is that some of these big powder companies have been receiving much larger contracts than what Hodgdon can even think of asking for.

Why would they provide 1000 pounds a year to Hodgdon when they get contracts for 10X that amount.
