GUYS PAY ATTENTION -- Skin Cancer!

I have had 5 places worked on my head for skin cancer in the last year so pay attention ! The last one 2 days ago on my scalp included 3 cuts ;20 shots ;and 9 staples !Head looks like a melon , more than normal lol.Told the Doc I had a full head of hair when I came in here.He pinched so much skin for the staples he raised my ears an inch ! I am afraid to blink !!Young women at the bar think it's kinky, wife not so much !

Yep. I've had three MOHS procedures (2 on face, 1 on ear) for basal cancers, plus five other slices on back, shoulders, arms.

Anyone who has lived in the Southwest, or who has had considerable sun exposure over the years should see a very good, careful dermatologist who literally looks at every square inch of your body twice annually.

A Melanoma appearing the size of a pea can kill you.

Yep. Had to donate a chunk from My left temple a few years ago. Doc did a good job, you can barely tell it. The waiting room in a Dermatologist office in My neck of the woods is a scary sight :(

I've numerous spots frozen/burnt off from my younger days, but one spot on left forearm had to be cut off/out. Was about the size of a quarter or a bit more, and about the same thickness as a quarter according to the doc. It took a looonnnngggg time to heal as well. I've been wearing those long sleeve "cool" shirts with a hood for several years now, I'm basically covered from head to toe in some form of fashion. Even wear wide brim hats if I wash the car, etc.,

I lost my father to melanoma related cancers last year. I say related because it develops into other cancers quite easily. His MD treated, excised, and irradiated multiple times to destroy the cells growing on his ears, forehead, lips, etc. The problem with it is, the skin is highly vascular; if even one cell remains behind, it can hit the circulatory 'super highway', and deposit somewhere else, to begin growing another type of cancer - in his case, lung, bone, and kidney cancers.

Having grown up a left coast beach kid who played baseball a ton, I am far too late to do anything other than prevent further damage, and hope for the best, but both of my kids have a heightened awareness of the risk of long term sun exposure.

Grew up on the farm. Back in those days we baled hay all summer long. Many, many hours in the sun without a shirt on. I've had one MOH surgery and a complete face treatment with blue light as well as several pre cancer facial spots burned off with dry ice. Back when I was a youngster the danger of sun rays weren't known. So important to use sunscreen and keep the skin covered from the sun.

I live in the Southwest and golf. A lot of the men I golf with have had parts of their ears and nose worked on. I use a lot of sunscreen, especially on my ears and nose. Your skin is the largest organ on your body. BTW, a large brimmed hat is also good.

I'm having a complete head and face blue light treatment November 7th. I had seven spots of cancer cut off last month and just finished up a ten day twice a day treatment on my arms the day before yesterday. I've had some pretty serious and deep chunks cut out of me. The rest of my body will be in 6 months. Doing my legs first. In the sun all my life shorts no shirt in south Florida. I was a concrete finisher for 40 years.

Boss, I've had two Basals removed from my nose, and several frozen all benign. The one that darn near got me was prostate. Please, if you get a blood test for anything ask them specifically to do a PSA test while they are are at it , if it gets out of there the first stop is the lymph nodes and it's all over at that point if it's the aggressive type. Just spent 18 months including surgery and radiation to get the all clear for now. Make sure you get the PSA test done! John

Unlike some I’m an expert on nothing.
However not to be a wise ass, my experience level with skin cancers is … well extensive.
The those facing Moh’s surgery it generally goes very well. The trick is to catch anything before it launches roots to your lymph nodes. Cutting to a clear surface is mandatory and a dead on pathology report is what you need. There is even some ‘chemotherapy’ cremes that are not generally used in this country BUT work quite well on many types of skin cancers and now the ‘but’ the healing process is disgusting looking. Can not be covered during the healing which means you’ll do your food shopping at 6 AM or wind up in a fist fight from the idiots staring. When it’s working it looks like a cooked piece of bacon. End result is great though.
About 4 years ago I started taking pictures because I got a cell phone.
To date my first Mon’s was 1990 ! Infancy of that operation.
Other operations vary from general anesthesia to local.
Over 75 on my face and over 50 on each forearm.
That qualifies me as ‘experienced’ but not an expert. 8mm sectional removed from each lower eyelid was a tricky one.
My real problem is there are no doctors studying the effects anymore on white men exposed to insane amounts of agent orange. Not a lot of patients left so it’s like learning to be a Citroen mechanic in this (USA) country. “Where are the cars?”
Up side is with over 75 done on my face I sure as hell don’t look my age at all.
Anyone with a similar background and has a question how something went for me just PM me. And as I said I’m not an expert or dermatologist or ‘unofficial’ site expert. Just a guy who went down that block and took pictures.

My nose is still healing up from a MOHS procedure done a couple of months ago. Have a follow-up on Tuesday. They had to go so deep it actually started to penetrate my nostril.
Just an FYI, the skin on your nostrils doesn't "slip" like it does on other parts of your body. So, in order to cover up that crater, they had to cut from the bridge of my nose, down to the tip, cut skin and cartilage away to form a "flap", pull that down and then stitch it up. 22 stitches. The right side of my nose still doesn't have the right feeling as all of the nerves have not reformed yet and my right nostril will always be just a bit higher than my left.
I am sure I have more in my future as I spent way too much time in the sun without sunscreen during my Navy days and while working outside mowing, cutting trees, etc.

I'm in the skin cancer club too, a club you don't want to belong to for sure.

Mine was basal cell and I had it surgically removed in the spring, but it was a wakeup call. I'm not a sun worshipper at all or a beach guy but 50 years of summer varmint hunting and the resultant sun exposure has taken its toll. I now on a watch list for more lesions!!

Can you believe in the early 70's I didn't even wear a hat and hunted in short sleeves - of course no sunscreen either. Dumb and dumber!!! Macho man!!!

Learn from my stupid mistakes - use sunscreen, wide brim hat, long sleeves. Don't join the skin cancer club!

Been dealing with it for about 20 years now, had one on my forehead that had been there so long that when it was taken out that I now have a very easy to see dent on my forehead. Needless to say "skin cancer" isn't just on your skin and yes if you don't correct it it may kill you.

Remember sun protection lotions have an expiration date. Also the older ones have very inaccurate SPF factor. Allegedly the US government mandated a correction. Years as go some said 100
100 is in your basement in the winter!
