A friend of mine that works as a smith at a shop here in town part time recieved a gun last week that he was told has a stuck casing. I told him of a few tricks that he could use that wouldn't damage the rifle and he got back to me today saying that they didn't work. After my boss let me off work early today I stopped by the rifle to find a beautiful FN mauser marked 300M on the barrel. I go into the store front and grab a round of 300winmag and a round of 300H&H off of a hunch after looking into the chamber. After getting back to the shop I confirm what they had confirmed, the 300winmag does not go in as if there is a case head separation. However the 300H&H then gets dropped in perfect fit minus the gouge marks now in the chamber from a week of fighting to get the "brass" out of the chamber. I have never seen a smith or store owner turn whits so fast I thought they were having a heart attack.
Is their best bet to turn back the barrel one thread and re-chamber as I am thinking? Or is there a better/cheaper alternative? The rifles owner shop owner and gunsmith were all under the assumption that this was something it wasn't and ended up damaging the chamber bad enough that you cut lines in brass on chambering now. I have to admit being the bit of a masochist that I am I got a bit of a chuckle out of this once in the car. Talk about shit traveling down hill.
