Gunsmith Certification

??? Can anyone give me some real honest advice on what I could do to become a certified gunsmith? I realize it would take years of hands on experience but I am 36 yrs old and have been around firearms as long as I can remember back and have a very good basic knowledge of firearms and their nomenclature. I want to apply this knowledge combined with further education and do it for a living. I am former Marine Infantry and current law enforcement officer and I'm ready to take my current knowledge further. Any schools or courses worth the money or time?

NRA Summer classes are good. Basically couple of weeks at a good school learning one task (barreling, bedding, etc.). Other than that Trinidad Community College in Colorado has an outstanding program. Lassen Community College is good as well I believe. Ask a working gunsmith and google gunsmithing education. Better also ask how business is these days for your local smith.

Colorado School of Trades (Gunsmithing) in Lakewood Colorado. I went there in 1975 for two years. Although I never became working gunsmith. I knew what I was doing when I got out. Junior Colleges require to many classes that are unneeded for the profession.

If you go to Trinidad you don't have to take anything other than gunsmithing class's and you got your choice of a two year or three year program.

A customer hiring a gunsmith spends little time reading the diploma on the wall.

Many gunsmiths find out that the used gun rack in front of the counter is making more money than the mill and lathe behind the counter.
