Gunk On A Glossy Action

I purchased a Rem 700 recently and the high gloss finish is immaculate. Except for someone used something, I suppose a thread locker to mount his scope basses. I managed to get it off around the front base but the rear almost appears more like a stain. I've tried Hoppes and a couple other solvents. I even hit it lightly with some 0000 steel wool and oil but can seem to cut it with anything. It will probably be hidden by my one scope base, but it's the point. If I can get it off, I want it off. Any help is appreciated. I've got a little OCD I think.

Try some Flitz.

Good idea. I asked for one of those for Christmas. We are opening gifts at my sons house the weekend. Maybe I'll get lucky.

It is possible that the blueing has been stained or impregnated by something, possibly acidic, and you could make it worse. If the area is gonna be covered by the new base, I might not worry about it.

I have been my own worst enemy when it comes to the "Just a liiiittttlllle bit more" syndrome. jd

Maybe stained. I tried Hoppes, oil and steel wool, super glue remover, white gas from my Coleman lantern, denatured alcohol, gun care cloth which I really thought would work, and some other stuff, but no dice. I have surrendered to fate and put a scope base on it and now I can't see it. But I know it's there.

Thanksl

Jds, I‘m 72 and have taken my lumps and paid my dues. This happens to be the most beautiful gloss blued barrelled action I’ve ever had and it’s as close to perfect as I’ve ever had. So I tried, but I can’t make it perfect. and yes, I am a fortunate man to have what I have, I have time to fiddle with things that don’t matter much and if I don’t know how to do something, I ask for advice here. Thanks to you all for sharing the knowledge you have.

can you feel it with your finger? my guess is if you cannot catch it w your fingernail it may have stained the blueing/metal? I would be worried about making it worse. I used a toothpick and some light solvent to get most of some locktite off a sako receiver top.

Reminds me of a talk with my Minister. I was rebuilding and adding to the Church Sanctuary. I’m normally a very finicky perfectionist when I work. This was Church work and I kicked my perfectionism into high gear. My Minister was watching me one day and asked me about why I was so “intense”. I told him I wanted it to be perfect! He smiled and said: “Only God is perfect”

I tried solvents and popsicle sticks. My fingernails are like steel and it worked on the front but the goo was thicker. It's thin on the back and you can't really feel it. I think the back is stained. I'll let it be for now and if I find something else I think might work, I may try it. Right now I have a couple triggers to figure out. Thanks again for the help folks and I hope your holidays were as good as mine.

Steve

Try the Frontier Big 45 pad on it. It will never harm the bluing and has worked wonders on some of my old guns.
