Gun Vice

Hello all, it has been so long since I logged in here that my user name vanished. Place has seen a few changes since then...

I am sure this has been asked before, but when I search for "vice," I get thousands of returns for things like advice, device, etc.

I finally broke down and purchased a gun vice to replace all my padded blocks and the like. I picked up the Tiptons Best Gun Vice. To be honest, the thing is a major piece of junk. Flimsy, and light weight. I can pull a gun right out of the clamps with almost no effort unless I tighten down the screws to the point that the whole thing is distorted.
To make matter worse, you can't get guns to point down hill unless you prop the stock up, and that makes clamping even worse. I would prolly pay $20.00 or so for it, which considering that it has absolutely no reinforcing or even extra material at contact points, is all it is worth.
Seriously, you folks that give it high marks need to demand more so we get more. The only reason Tipton gets away with selling a piece of junk like this at such a high price is that people say nice things about it.

Does anyone make a decent gun vice? Or am I stuck with it?
It's not like I am asking much, I just want the thing to grip my gun securely so goop runs out the muzzle without skating across the bench. It would be really nice it held pistols as well.

P.S. I like the little quiz before I post that weeds out folks that do not know guns :)

I agree with you. It's better than what I had before (nothing), but it is way light and flimsy, and really does not hold my rifles securely at all. I wish there was something better.

Oh... it's a gun vise, not a gun vice. That might help your searches.

Now although I never use a vise in the field (I tend to use my front and rear rest at my bench), in the workshop I just love the VersaVise. I got mine from Brownells and they are now knocked off in Ch*** by a product called the Parrot Vise. I use these with padded jaws and grab either the barrel or the stock, just hard enough to keep them in place. Works great for cleaning, maintenance, assembly...even stock making. I use it for everything.

You can purchase the CTK Precision P3 Ultimate Gun Vise at

for a little better price.
I purchased the CTK Precision P3 Ultimate Gun Vise and the CTK Precision Shooting Rest Attachment together for about $141.00.. Works well for any rifle that way.

Thank you all for the input.
I may just take the time to build something.

Here's my nothing fancy simple and effective home made vice. Works perfect and built it with misc stuff I had in the basement, so the price was right !
