Gun Safe !?!!?!?!?!

Found a nice deal on a safe... I've been needing one for quite some time, so I think I'm gonna jump on it. This one in particular weighs 700lbs... Not the heaviest, but not something to mess around with. The place I'm planning on getting it from does not deliver or install. They simply load it onto your truck with a fork lift.

how do you guys handle these things? I can imagine even small adjustments in position are real pain in the ass!

Also, I live in an older house, that has 2x6 floor joists. Should I reinforce the floor underneath this thing? (easily accessible from the basement).

2X6 floor joists? That is mighty light for a floor structure. Does it bounce easily when you walk on it? I would definitely shore it up where ever you place the safe for sure. Does that floor have cross support beams fairly close together? I just can not see how that floor does not bounce like a trampoline, if it does not.

haha... it does bounce. Horrible design for sure! It really makes me angry. If you drop something on one side of the house, the shit on the other side of the house rattles around.

I'll be sure to throw a little frame underneath it and a couple posts.

Took 3 of us to move my new safe in my house, was able to take a piece of carpet and tilt safe back onto carpet over the doorstep and slid thru kitchen on the carpet, then onto hallway carpet and struggled it back to far bedroom. Its always a treat to move those buggers. Thank god no stairs were involved. I did have to buy the beer though. ;D

I purchased a Liberty safe myself as they are local to me and they deliverd and set it up were i wanted, your problem is trying to get it into your house how much is it worth to you to have it done for you unless you have some friends that will work for BEER.

There is a safe company that makes a sectional safe that interlocks together.Google breakdown safe's.It only take's 2 people to get it together.Once it is one piece no one can get it apart. It is a new concept ,but it works.

The safe I am referring to is the Zanotti modular safe, there is a write up on our 6mmbr website off the homepage. It is quite a unit,it deserves your attention before you make a mistake.

700 Lbs? Get a good hand dolly and move it yourself. The hardest part is tipping it over so the weight is on the dolly. My wife and I moved mine and it weighs over 850Lbs. And she is a pretty small framed woman, honestly with a good hand dolly you will not have any trouble. Definetly sure up the floor underneath, you'll have to contend with the weight of your guns too. They add up quick.

Well, to start, leave the little skinny fellers at home. They just ain't ready! Then get all your biggest buddies, preferrably the ones that have huge egos and think they need to prove how big and bad they are. then just sit back like a spoiled housewife guarding the beer and tell them where you need it.

If the situation allows, you can probably almost double the strength of the floor by screwing and gluing some 3/4" plywood to the bottom of the joists, before you move the safe into place. Cover the whole area where the safe will be and more. Run the 4x8 sheet in the direction of the floor joists.

Know anyone with a pallet jack?
Use the open safe door for leverage to maneuver the safe, I've seen the pros walk a safe into position in this manner. Just be very careful you don't end up with the safe on top of you.

I had help getting mine out of the back of my pickup, then used 1/4" hardwood dowels to roll it across the concrete floor of the basement and into place. Put down 4 or 5 dowels and as you uncover the rear one, move it to the front. Of course, this will probably not work on carpet.

First take the door off, and move the door where you want the safe.

Then move the rest of the safe and put the door back on.

;D

helped a bud get one out of a basement and into his basement....we used a refrigerator dolly it worked great...remove the door and strap the safe fast to the dolly....it took four of us to get it out and three to put it in....

as pcrowe said with the dowels......you could try some pvc pipe 1in or 2in sch 40 or 80.......i moved a 10 x 14 shed across my back yard with a skid steer and 4in pvc pipe......everyone involed was amazed how strong the stuff really is...myself included

good luck on the move

thanks for the responses guys!

I have access to a refrigerator dolly, so that will likely be my weapon of choice. The only down side is that I don't know when I can get it... probably not until next week :(

I think getting the thing off of the truck is going to be the worst of it! I will certainly be providing the beers, and likely grilling steak and potatoes and whatnot....

jonbearman - I didn't ignore you post. I really like those safes, but the one I found is about $1k less :).

just picked up the safe! Can't wait to get it settled in and put to use. Will feel good to get all my guns secured; especially that precious bench gun that costs 4x more than the safe!

Steaks and beer! It may be cheaper to hire a professional moving crew. But hey you can't put a price on a good time with friends.

a local rent it center should be able to get you a dolly for about $7.00 a day. If you have to go down any steps, useing a tow strap flat style (it's what I have) and a couple long 2x 4s or 2 x 6s and it goes down SMOOTH and CONTROLED.

got the safe in with a dolly... not easy, and not fun. These things are beasts!

I would recommend getting a safe through a supplier that delivers and installs, so that you don't have to deal with it. Maybe even look into the safes that you build on-site (as mentioned in previous posts). Maybe even get 2 small safes instead of one big one.

I didn't make any steaks but the guys did get a hefty buzz on the beer I provided (After the install of course). We made turkey sandwiches at about 3am... not quite a steak but tasted damn good after killing 1.5 cases of beer! haha!

sounds like if you ever have to move it....you need to trick the people who helped you or you need new friends who never moved a safe before
