gun laws in the UK and other countries

a friend of mine and I are having a slight discussion / debate, over gun laws in other countries, mainly Britian and Australia.
So what are the laws over there, can you have your own gun, buy a gun, keep it at your home, etc...?

Here in Australia, the average citizen can own a firearm, the uneducated anti-gun lobby like to call them weapons). This however is after you have applied to your relevant states Firearms Registry for a license and a Permit to Acquire, this can take months sometimes more). In a nut shell we can own handguns, manually operated rifles,ie not self loading or fully automatic) and shotguns, not pump action or auto unless you have a genuine need, which is usually professional pest control)

U.K. aka Great Britain,
allowed to keep firearms and shot guns at home.
No autoloader rifles except 22rimfire.
Pistols banned except black powder revolvers or long barrelled revolvers with wrist brace with 12 inch barrell and 24 overall length.
Every owner licensed by Police that involves personal visit and you have to sign declaration foregoing patient confidentiality with your doctor.
You have to state what you want on your firearms ticket and every additional weapon must be subject to an approved ' variation to license' before you can purchase, each Variation costs money).
Self defense is a reason for REFUSAL to be licensed, we have NO RIGHT TO SELF DEFENSE of person or property, wether at home or on the street.
Shot guns permitted on Shotgun license, twin barrelled or 2+i semi or pump. Multi shot are classed as firearms and you must prove neccessity to own.
The law stipulates caliber for each specis, too much gun is prohibeted as well as too little.
All land belongs to someone. There is no state land as you know it in America. If you don't own the land you must have permission to shoot from land owner. Only exception wildfowling below high water mark on salt water in Scotland.
All game or pest specis are in effect owned by whoevers land they are on at the time. Game specis have legal seasons, pests are all year quarry.
This is a short answer to a huge question, any more questions will be freely answered.
P.s if a scumbag steals your weapon, the police will spend ten times the time in prosecuting you than they will trying to find the scumbag.

as longdog stated plus we have to state on our fire ams certificate[fac] the type and amount of ammo we wish to purchase.you have to have permission on your fac to purchase expanding ammo.we now have to produce our fac to buy primers and powder.expanding ammo cannot be posted to your home unless you are a rfd[registered firearms dealer]we can however buy match ammo-posted.oh nearly forgot you cannot mow purchase air rifles posted.
apart from all the bulls**t we put up with this country has some
