I recently contacted my Montana state officials to voice my opinion on gun control. The messages I have received back are copied and pasted below. One is from Montana Senator Max Baucus (D), Congressman Steve Daines (R), and Senator Jon Tester (D).

This will probably go in the sack with the rest of the gun control threads and I probably won't respond if negative debate is started here. Just wanted to share them with you all. Hope this gives some of you hope for the outcome on Gun Control in Washington DC.

Dear Brandon:

Thank you for expressing your views with me regarding gun control. I appreciate hearing from you on this important issue.

Like every other parent in America, my heart is broken by the tragic shooting in Connecticut. Mel and I continue to pray for the victims and their families. This and other recent tragedies have raised serious questions about the culture of violence in our society - questions that deserve careful reflection on everything from access to mental health care to the video games our children play.

Many folks have been contacting me with their concerns about various pieces of legislation that would hamper an individual's right to keep and bear arms. I support the constitutional rights of responsible, law-abiding gun owners, and enforcing the laws on the books to protect people from violence. As I reflect, I am listening carefully to my bosses in Montana, and it is clear that any national discussion on gun control must also take into account the values Montanans expect me to protect.

In the past, I have supported commonsense efforts to curb violence when those efforts have not infringed upon the rights of the American people to keep and bear arms. Some of the proposals that I've supported include putting more police on the streets through the "COPS" program, and increasing funding for after-school programs and youth counseling. We must be careful that efforts to prevent crime do not infringe upon the constitutional rights of sportsmen and women, and other law-abiding gun owners to purchase and use firearms.

Thanks again for getting in touch. I also encourage you to visit my website at http://www.baucus.senate.gov for current information on what I'm doing both here in Washington and at home to help Montana. Please contact me with any additional comments or concerns.

Sincerely,
Max Baucus

Mr. Brandon Deboer

Dear Mr. Deboer:

Thank you for contacting me to express your support for continuing to protect our nation’s Second Amendment rights following the unspeakable tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut. I value your point of view and appreciate the opportunity to respond.

As a father of four, I am deeply saddened by the tragedy in Connecticut and pray that nothing like this ever happens again. It has become increasingly clear that there is a need to be proactive in increasing access to mental health resources and helping schools strengthen their ability to protect their students. Without a doubt, our nation’s health care system is in need of common-sense reforms that put patients and their relationship with their doctor first, and mental health must be part of that equation.

With that said, I am committed to protecting our Second Amendment rights, and I do not believe Washington should make rash decisions on controversial firearm restriction proposals that many experts believe would be ineffective in preventing violent crimes. While I believe we need to strictly enforce current laws forbidding potentially dangerous persons from possessing a firearm, I will work to ensure that Congress protects the constitutional rights of the thousands of Montanans who safely and lawfully possess or use a firearm.

Again, thanks for contacting me. It is my number one priority in Congress to represent the values and interests of the people of Montana, and your input is very helpful as I do. Please do not hesitate to contact me again in the future regarding this or any other federal issue important to you.

Sincerely,
Steve Daines
Member of Congress

Reply from Senator Jon Tester (D) - Not sure if I trust a word this guy says though. He's kinda one to play both sides of the ball to get his future votes. Notice how "vague" the details of his response is...

Dear Brandon,

Thank you for contacting me about gun violence, gun control proposals, and the recent massacre in Newtown, Connecticut. As a father, a grandfather, and a former teacher, I've mourned the lives lost. Like millions of Americans, I am struggling to understand this senseless attack.

Mass shootings are tragically becoming too common and as a U.S. Senator, it is my responsibility to address the growing issue of violence in America's schools and public places. In the coming weeks, I hope that our country will consider how we can help keep people - especially innocent children - safe while protecting our constitutional rights.

Moving forward, we must find careful, balanced solutions that do both. I have a long history of protecting the Second Amendment, and I will keep that value in mind as we consider these important issues. With input from Montanans, I look forward to rising to this important challenge. Please do not hesitate to contact me again if I can be of further assistance.

Sincerely,

Jon Tester
United States Senator

Although I live in LA, I can remember an ax Max campaign years ago because of his gun control stance. Somehow he has managed to straddle the fence (like our Mary Landrieux) and remain in office. I think that we could do better than either one of these wishy-washy Dems. James Ps I don't know much about your Representative.

Got another response from Senator Jon Tester (D) and added it to my first post. Not sure if I trust him as he often seems to side with the Obama administration.

I signed the Ruger link here that was posted on this site and I too have received responses from my representatives as well. I live in New York State( I know, I know,,, really sad to be me/us)

Now I must write letters as well. Even the great Mr. Schumer sent back just about the same response as the OP's responses to his letter. Sad thing is we all know where Schumer really stands on gun control.

They'll tell us whatever they think we want to hear. Always have, always will.

I know, I know. I wish I could get my hands on a response they sent to a person that contacted them and pleaded for their support of the proposed gun bans in D.C. Because you know that there are many people contacting them from the other side of the ball as well.

That would definitely show their true colors ;)

Perhaps I could infiltrate an Anti-gun website and get my hands on some information about how the representatives are supporting them? A little espionage if you will... 8)

Many politicians will say whatever they feel will get them re-elected. To them, that is the first consideration, and they will think twice about voting against their party line that would result in loss of financial support when they run for re-election.

Senate hearings= more gun control reteriq. Who controls the Senate? Who as a majority want gun control? Our only hope is the House will stop whatever the Senate proposes. Im not sure about this but I think it takes a 2/3 majority of the Senate to overturn Presidental mandates. It will be awhile before any of the lawsuits are settled. Scotty

Having watched and listened to the entire hearings, I DO NOT believe there will be an assault weapons ban, nor a high cap magazine ban. I do believe a national background check will pass. The laws that individual States legislate is an entirely different ball game.

A national background check could mean faster approval times, I know here in Virginia there are a lot of delays. Might actually improve the process.

I hope this OK. I like this guy and Milwaukee should be proud.

JRS: I agree. No AW ban? Looks to me like they're a pretty smart bunch and could see where the previous AW ban didn't do a thing. Maybe something good will finally come out of it?
We can only hope.

David Clark is the kind of people we need behind us and we as law abiding gun owners are lucky to have people like this. He truly understand our second amendent but even more so the fact that law abiding citizens of the USA should be able to protect them self's when nobody else can. As far as Piers Morgan goes send him back to where he came. After Sandy Hook he was interviewing some people from the area that were devastated by what happened and rightfully so. One gentleman produly stated he sold his AR15 after what happened and all I thought was why didn't Piers ask do you truly know that gun is now safer in the new owners hands than yours.

There is already a National Background Check, the NICS that is called in after you fill out Form 4473.

If you mean a more involved one, be careful what you wish for, as Medical and Mental Records are what they are talking about adding.

It would create a major concern for many. I was talking to one of my neighbors yesterday about this very thing. If medical records become a part of a background check, people such as my neighbor, a former US Marine, might be SOL. He now realizes this. He put in for the PTSD benefit of $125.00 per month and it was approved. He admits there is nothing wrong with him, but wanted the monthly benefit. His medical records now show a mental disorder for which he is taking medication. Thousands of others have done the same without realizing they might be giving up their right to buy or own a gun.

I mean no longer going through the state police and just having a central background check authority.

As for medical records, I don't care if they know I have chronic heartburn and bone spurs in my elbow.

You might not care about those things now because it doesn't affect you. However in the future you might develop a nondescript problem that DOES affect you and then it's too late.

Why doesn't the NRA parade some witnesses who can testify that a gun saved their life, to counter all the gun victims stories? And whatever happened to the study that showed that having a gun prevented crimes 2 million times a year. Heck, I stopped two crimes with guns, and I haven't fired a shot in anger yet. Just worked the bolt on a Mauser once, when someone was trying the front door at 1 AM. Running feet sounds across the porch, never came back!
