GUN CASE FOAM.

Anyone know where to get the foam that's often used to pad gun cases? The kind that also looks like this. I bought a gun case that's deeper than normal, but they didn't put thick enough foam into it and 2 guns will just slide around into each other. Hopefully something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg.

Closed cell foam is what it it's called. The bed padding at Wal-Mart is good padding and cheaper than buying something connected to the shooting world.
I've broken brain cells trying to figure out what to buy ! I have a project going and want stiff but not marring padding. Seems it's really crazy priced.
Right now rolled and taped bed padding is working in my rest case.

TY, will look into it.

Bought some "mattress" foam from the World of Wally. Around $9 + tax for a 36" x 72" piece. Before I open it is there any chance it will be corrosive to firearms?

I wouldn't think so. I got the same. I cut it and rolled, taped with duct tape.
What solvents Will do to it, idk.
This was the white right ?

The yellow crumbles as it gets old.

Yes, the white stuff. Blow molded polyurethane foam with no added flame retardant chemicals. Says it can discolor some when exposed to heat and light. So I would only be using the case for transport and limited firearm storage.

I imagine that solvents like acetone, xylene, charcoal starter, etc might tend to dissolve it. I wanted a case that was a little deeper than the usual ones since it seems that one is squishing down on scoped rifles too much with the thinner ones. Unfortunately the maker didn't include thick enough foam packing IMO.

I believe the correct description for that is open cell convoluted foam.

The egg crate pattern is the "convoluted" and I think closed cell foam is stiffer and more plasticky.

An easy to customize and not too expensive option is Kaizen foam. Look it up on YouTube, there are lots of tutorials for making custom case interiors, drawer liners and even wall hanging tool storage using razor blades or heat.

The nice part is after it's customized, it stays together because it doesn't have edges that want to tear away like cubed pick and pluck foam.

1.5" convoluted foam is what that is called. Most foam shops carry it. The Foam Factory (Michigan) sells it. Typically about 15.00-20.00 per piece around 16-18" wide x 60-72" long. Shipping may change that number alot.

I had a similar issue with a large double rifle case. The piece to separate the two guns was too thick short of a red Ryder thick rifle.
I went to the mart and got a mattress pad and cut a piece out. It was maybe 1 1/2” thick or so. Keeps them separated and from damaging each other.

Any issue with the foam damaging the guns or didn't you keep them in it long enough to find out? My case can hold 2, but I'll probably just use it for 1.
