Guess as to what the life of a 6.5-06 barrel would be?

I have found and LA Remington 700 Sendero with HS stock. Its really nice but chambered in 270 win. I would like to have this built in an 6.5-06 if I decide to get it. As compared to a 6.5-284 the barrel life should be better right. I plan on shooting this as much as I can and finding some Matches "F-class/Practical rifle"
to shoot in too. 140gr Bergers and a velocity of 2900-3000 26" bbl. Thanks for your time.

I have built two 6.5-06's. One was shot in the national match course and that barrel is showing it's age because of the rapid fire strings. The erosion is not much different than a 270 or a 25-06. If you shoot them with hot loads and get them hot the barrel will suffer. HEAT KILLS

I went with the 6.5-270 which is pretty much the same with a little different shoulder that is supposed to be more efficient from what I hear, and I'm kind of wondering the same thing cause I am shooting the 140 bergers with 56.2 grns of RL22 at 3100 which i know is fast but I have no preasure signs and they shoot so damn good. I am only expecting 800-900 but you never know until it stops shooting.

The degree of accuracy you need will depend on what shooting discipline you want to shoot. Benchrest will require the most and your barrel may be toast after 6-800 rds. I shoot mid-long range 600-1K yd matches and my 6.5/06 (on its 3rd barrel) has gone over 2,000 per barrel. Around this count the barrels still held the 10 ring but I new accuracy would be dropping off soon. If your hunting with it the barrel accuracy will be a lot longer if your talking about a minute of moose at X yds. For 600 yd matches you don't need 3,000 fps. Load it to around 28-2850 and push it to 3,000 fps for 1K matches. The faster you push the bullets the faster you'll burn out the throat. You won't give up much to the 6.5/284. You will get longer barrel life. This is a very accurate caliber and the 140gr weight class makes the 6.5/06 shine.

Good shooting, Jim
