Group and score degree of difficulty

I will say group shooting by a good margin. It is a two day Chinese fire drill in constantly changing conditions. It is one thing to say you are going to stay out of trouble and a whole other matter of actually doing that over 20 targets. You don’t have to shoot the smallest, but you can’t give away many shots.

UBR and group are similar in that you can make up for a bad shot over the course of the match. In IBS/NBRSA score, drop a point at 100 and you can go from leading to last in an instant...sudden death.
Regardless of the math in score, if you show up with a gun that will group only in the mid .3's, you're at or near the bottom of the list in either group or score...period. There is NOT a single rifle, tune nor shooter that can be competitive in either discipline with that rifle.

For those expressing a strong answer either direction, it would be interesting to also hear whether you have shot both group and score matches.
Yes, I have. At my very first registered group match, I was fortunate enough too shoot small group at 200 with a borrowed LV rifle...at se regionals.. fwiw. Finished top 3rd iirc.

I’m in agreement with jimmymac. In score you can hit both sides of the 10 ring and be fine. You do that with your first 2 shots in group and you’re pretty much screwed. I do enjoy score but you have a bit of wiggle room compared to group.
That's why I said what I did in my previous post. The math says you can shoot a perfect target with a .3 gun. Reality is far, far different. There is no such wiggle room IMO. Bottom line, I see absolutely no difference in the rifle accuracy potential nor the shooter's potential to shoot the difference and the aggs support that. So very, very best case scenario is that you get the width of the dot. In reality, are we that good? The scores and agg sizes say no. There has never been an agg shot even approaching .062, or even double that, much less a grand.

I shoot both, although now it is predominantly NBRSA Score because that is what we have a lot of in my area.

If you plan on being at the top in either, you need a Rifle that is in a sub .200 tune. In NBRSA Score, that probably means a HV in one of the short 30 calibers. In Group, that can mean a LV weight rifle. The difference in the recoil is enough to get your attention.

My style of shooting favors Score, since I have never been a ”Runner”.

My personable opinion is a great Group Shooter can master Score easier than a great Score Shooter can master Group.

That being said, neither is easy if your aim is to climb to the top.

In the end, I will shoot what is closest. I can shoot most weekends within a 3hr drive or less. I'm not gonna drive by a score match 2 hours away to shoot a group match that's 5 hours away very often and vice versa..., Truth.
I must be very lucky. I can shoot two 600 yard F-class club matches and one 1,000 yard F-class club match each month and only drive a half hour to each!
Nearest BR match is about 3 1/2 hours

Maybe I’m a score shooter trapped in a group shooter’s body (Trans-Benchrester). I’ve shot competitive short range group for over 30 years. On the flip side I’ve shot a grand total of 5 Score style matches. The first was in South Africa and I don’t remember where I placed. I’ve shot three score aggs at the Tack Driver, and the UBR Nationals a few weeks ago. At the Tack Driver I’ve placed 4th, 1st, and 8th In score, at the UBR Nationals I came 6th in Custom Class Grand and 2nd in the Unlimited grand (I tied for first but old man creedmoor got me). So for whatever reason score seems easier to me.

Strictly speaking, score is easier. Mathematically, a 50-5X (perfect) target can be had with 30BR shooting a .433" group (.308 bullet + .125 dot). That same .433" would have you near the bottom at most group matches.
.125 dot at 100? Never heard of that one but if you think a .3 or .4 gun can compete in score, I won't try to convince you otherwise but would welcome you to try it sometime

That line of thinking is for shooters who are stuck in around the 12x realm.
If your plan is to consistently hit 250 20+ X’s at 100, the reality of what it really takes will become evident.

I shoot about half a dozen each of Group and Score and a few UBR a year at 100-200yds. None are a walk in the park. Group is tougher for me, UBR is my favorite of the Score disciplines, but I do enjoy Score as well. As far as calling one "easier" I'd say easier is a relative term. JME. WD
