Have you ever shot a group and wondered what the size of the group would be if you kept shooting more shots into the group? Creighton Audette wrote a five part article in Precision Shooting published in October 1993 thru February 1994 titled, “Testing Rifles and Ammunitionâ€. Part 4 dealt with analysis of group size and was based in part on “Statistical Measures of Accuracy for Riflemen and Missile Engineers†by Frank E. Grubbs, Ph. D. published in 1965. This analysis allows one to estimate group sizes based on statistical long run averages. Based on this methodology you multiply a three shot group by 1.23 to obtain an estimate of a five shot group, multiply a five shot group by 1.24 to obtain an estimate of a ten shot group, and multiply a ten shot group by 1.17 to obtain an estimate of a twenty shot group.
