I bet the mayor in Wisconsin might be a not happy about groundhog day. The handler held him close so the Mayor could hear and the groundhog bit him in the ear. I the video you could see the groundhog bit him. Matt

That was funny. The look on that mayors face told me he understood the message the groundhog was saying.

"Get out of my face!" was the message in case some do not know what was said.

I concur with the therapy. Nothing beats a warm summer day or evening watching distant fields waiting for one to appear. 146 confirmed in 2014 with a dozen or more making it to their burrow after being hit, Longest confirmed was a laser-ed 900 yards with a .243AI and 105gr. A-Max. The Amish love to see me coming and the kids know there is candy in the truck! Last season debuted the .20-.223AI with 55 gr. Bergers and 39 gr. Blitzkings. This year is a .22-.284 throated for the 80 gr. A-Max. Krieger tube from 3rd Gen is here and just got confirmation from PTG that the chamber and Sizing Die reamers just shipped.

Over 600 in 17 years from one honeyhole NY farm....

Doing my part to send a message to Phil. I hate winter.

And I have been tracking Cody WY weather and it beats Upstate NY in warmer temps overall, less snow too. And I have seen ice here in May, still not melted off cause the sun hardly ever shines. 21 days straight of no sun in December. The only shadow that varmint saw was cast from Klieg lights.

Snert...

Where abouts in NY are you - I used to shoot farms up along the Taconic when I lived in NY - I might go back, cuz groundhogs are an endangered species here.

The coyotes eat the little ones on the first days out of the holes!

Cat,

Finger Lakes region, Cortland NY.

i only have three farms and they are crazy loaded. Drive 3 miles and there is NOTHING in the fields. I think God is just blessing me with targets!
I have not shot a PD. I think I would like it, and have a bunch of ammo loaded in case I ever go, but there is something in my blood about sitting in a hayfield, listening to the mourning doves and robins, watching the sun go lower and the cool breezes start rolling down the valley, spotting a pasture grizzly and hearing the 'Thump" of a fast 6mm hitting a big old fatty. If I shoot 3 or 4 I am happy. Though on two occasions in 8 hours we killed 23 and 26 respectively, all over 200 yards.

You must have snow 8 months a year... and rain the other four. I once was going to take a job at Eastman Kodak, up in Rochester until the locals told me about the weather.

For piece and beauty, I'll take a New England farm over a 'dog town every time.

Just FYI Catshooter, it is gonna be -20 tonight, my heat bill last month was 545 dollars and we just shoveled another 4 inches out of the driveway. I was talking to a guy in Lovell WY an hour ago and he felt bad for ME!

But summer looks like that photo and I love it! So where is that photo taken? That is the kind of shooting we do here. Though yours looks more like western PA. I did not know any NE states were good for chucks

Regards,
Snert

That took place about an hour from me. The Mayor got a little backwoods education on allowing an animal whisper in his ear. I am surprised that the blood was not freely flowing. Mayor had probably been outside long enough that his ear lobe was frozen!

Mayor needs to rethink who is on the Overwatch duty for the day and or get better equipment!

Snert, that might be partially my fault!
Our hunting camp is in Cortland Co, and we try to keep the 'chucks lead poisoned. Anymore, it's more of a challenge to shoot a 'chuck, than a deer!!!
I've been p-doggin' a couple times out west, and it sure is a hoot to be in such a target rich environment. But I agree, there's just something special about enjoying the time on a 'chuck field while waiting on one to take too long a peek. Nice weather, deer & turkeys feeding around you, a good set of glass to spot with/bird watch, and maybe a softy cooler of Dr. Pepper to help pass the time. Beautiful country to savor! I started bringing a vid-cam along to get some shots recorded, that adds another element of fun!!!

How many drams of powder does it take to get to 1520 yds?

1.865142857142857 Drams of powder, and 63.75 MOA of elevation...

... but a humbling lesson it is.

Just because you can range it and dial it, does not mean you can hit at 1520.

1520 yards will deflate your self confidence real fast :( :( :(

I lived in PA for 5 years.

'chuck shooting is great in mid and northern NYS,, used to be good in Connecticut, used to be good in Vermont and is kinda OK in Mass (but no one has any guns left)...

... but in Pennsylvania, it is a friggin' religion.

When I die, bury me, with my 16 pound 6mm Rem, 40XB/SS, 2" Unertl, and my Wild rangefinder - smack in the middle of Pennsylvania, cuz that is where heaven is!

That is a sharp setup please let us know what you are running. It is nice to see some old school stuff in the field.

Is is a Remington 40XB single shot in 244 Remington (6mm Rem to you young pups)... with 28" barrel. Bullet is 87gr V-Max @ ~3,500fps, with a 10" twist.

2" Unertl Ultra Varmint scope, with recoil spring, custom black mounts, and magnum recoil clamp.

The RF is a Swiss Wild 800mm optical artillery rangefinder - if your eye sight is good, it is accurate to ~ 5 feet at 1,000 yards.

This one has been restored to museum grade and has the rare oak and bronze tripod, plus the short prone tripod folded inside of it.

This is NOT your basic walkin' varmint rig ;) ;) ;)

Catshooter, come on out to NW Pa! It is a religion that I've been involved in for a long time. We are gonna hit them hard here in late March-early April only if snow is gone, then June thru Sept. are always good. I really believe I am evolving back to chuck hunting after shooting comps for 5 years. As you and others have already said, it don't get any better than lounging in a nice cut hay field late afternoon on a nice summer day waiting on them to poke up.

I started out shooting chucks in 1969 with my dads .222 Sako and that rifle was very accurate. My uncle reloaded at the time for my dad and I remember him using 50 grain pills in the handloads. So fast forward 35 years later I started my son shooting chucks at the early age of 7 YO, and he would rather go chuck hunting over shooting paper anytime.

You made me laugh out loud! ;) ;) ;)

I broke in on chucks with a 7mm Mag 40X and a Redfield 3200, back in 1979. In Western PA, Washington County. Totally gut hooked me and I have been at it ever since. Seems every gun I like is some mild variation on the 40X platform.

And I love shooting chucks. Maybe this year I will get a PA license and go back.

Catshooter you are probably older than me, I haven't seen a set up like that since the 60's and 70's! Still wish I had all my Unertl's Had 4. Had one of those rangefinders in my hands that I got at a gun show for $50 bucks, till a guy offered me $275, and it was gone also. Woodchucks were many back in the 60's now I'm lucky to see five a year.
