Groundhog Hunting Partners

I track sex, weight, location of burrow, moon phase, time of day, weather conditions and barometric pressure. I have walked within spitting range and been busted at half a mile. I'm never "content".

I track chores, work schedule, farmers feelings, grass height, sunny days and free time. When all align I grab my rifle and hope i see a chuck.

And when I do, I hope I am as cool as I think I am.:)

I lost a good friend and groundhog hunting partner yesterday. When you go out this spring with your friends or family into the field, really enjoy it. You never know when that last hunt will take place. Just a thought. Good Shooting, JZ
Sorrow to hear . I had 7 good friend that we hunted and fished together . 4 years a go I lost the last one . You never realize what they meant to you and others. Shooting is almost the same . Now I have went back to race cars . The pleasure you get from
Mentoring younger is very rewarding. Larry

While my wife has often told me to go eat snow (i think she means yellow snow) and i have heard snert to mean dirty snow or ice on roads or tug boats, i took my writing alias from my beagle, who got her name from that famous Viking, Hagar the Horrible, who had a beagle named snert who wore a helmet and could always track a garbage can.

Your compliment is appreciated. And it is my sincere hope that Mr M will still buy me that sandwich (or was I buying???) when we meet later this month. If his manners equal his groundhog shootin skills, i think we will be friends. :)

But really, moon phase?? o_O

Like many of you I had a group of friends that I fished and hunted with back in the 80s. They're all gone now except for 2, one in bad health and another that just doesn't hunt any longer. I still go but don't have as much time as I did.

I miss the Coshocton and Holmes area in OH, that's where we had all our fun. I live in Grafton and actually hunt this area but it's not like it was 20 years ago.

I have a hunting forecast app that is based on moon phase but I've had great days hunting groundhogs when the forecast was poor and vise versa.

As far as tracking goes, I would say you will see more right after a rain and fewer on windy days especially when there are strong gusts.

On the subject of pups, I don't have a clue. Some are extremely wary while others are just plain dumb.

Nomad,

I see similar. HOT dry days and the chucks lay low. Wind makes em spooky. If it rains, they pop like mushrooms. Pups are like teenagers. Never know what the heck they will do.

I never checked moon phase as I never considered a woodchuck nocturnal, and if they are, I am asleep or otherwise occupied. But it raises the question: Could I now have a reason for NV?

And since we should keep this on topic, I will mention I have had only 2 good partners. One was my mentor and now we are at opposite ends of the cycle. He is slowing and I am busy. He says he wants to go, but he has "aged" into having so many "restrictions" on how a perfect day is supposed to go and how it is "done" that we find we talk about it more than hunting. Can't hunt too early. Can't shoot too short. Can't shoot that kind of rifle. Can't do this or that....so we end up talking about the old days. And that is fine. He is a good man.

The other guy I only hunted with three times and thought enough of him to turn over all my NY fields to him when I moved.

I do like hunting with my daughter. But she is not nuts about it. Really enjoys it, but doesn't push hard to go like I did at her age. But she shoots well. The guy who graciously took me PD hunting once really blessed her by coaching and encouraging her that day. She is now hooked.

I lost my right arm man over the weekend. We've been shooting 3D archery since it's inception. He was a fulltime proshop,archery/guns dealer forever.

We traveled and hung with leaders in traditional archery industry for almost 40 years. He was a mentor and my competition. He helped raise my 4 sons from diapers,to all be front line stickbow junkies.

I was happy to be giving him straight up competition on his last course. Both of us being where we needed.
