GROUND HOG HABITS

As licensed teen-age drivers in Ohio in the 50's, GH shooting buddies and I knew and had access to virtually all prime alfalfa fields within 15 mile radius of home town and had a regular circuit of farms we hunted.

It never failed to amaze me how fast they learned from dangerous situations. Those who were spooked by their naked exposure after a field was cut for hay were the toughest to get. All it took was one missed shot and we could forget about hunting there again until "grass was up" because the hoggies would run for cover if we even slowed our car down on the gravel roads!

Sigh! Back then it was good. Hoggies and Girls were in a neck to neck chase for our favorites. Thank God for solving the dilemma. Hoggies before dusk, girls after dusk.

And I will also be looking up for GHs/THs from now on.
Didn't even know they climbed

Oh yes they will climb - I haven't seen it a lot but I shot one as recent as last month that had climbed up on a fallen log to survey the area apparently looking for any threats. It was about as perfect of profile shot you could ever imagine. It was only about 160 yards - I nailed him with my 223 Rem Model 7 and 50 Nosler BT.

Last year I'm sitting on a tree line and about 7:00 PM I see movement on the top of a branch of a fallen tree. I put the "binocks" on the area and sure enough it was a hog, rather large one surveying the area. I could not shoot because there was no back stop so I waited until he climbed down and proceeded to the alfapha field in front of me. I nailed him at 230 yards, nice old big fat male.
