Grizzly G509G Lathe

Full disclosure. I have a clone of the Hardinge tool room lathe. It has electronic threading so it sincs itself, no looking at a threading dial. And it cuts to a stop, so no kicking it out in an undercut before the shoulder. The compound also has a lever to retract the tool. It is the slickest machine for cutting threads without going full cnc that I have seen. That is some of what you get when spending the extra money.
Do you have any pictures.
Over time I have heard they are great to thread on.

Thank you
Hal

ive seen videos of the hardinge threading and they do look slick. what size spindle bore does yours have?

All of the Hardinge tool room lathes have the 5C collet bore in the spindle so 1.250 is the max where the base of the collet goes. I order a lot of straight test barrels and spec the od 1.245 -.005. Have not had a problem doing that.

thanks Walt- sounds like that would work 4 me. My neighbor has a rusting Hardinge in the front yard
for several years. Its a shame but at least I can go look at it to see how it works.

Look for some videos chris harris put out on threading with his that has a cnc conversion. Its a work of art. We had one in a machine shop i worked in but we only used it for secondary operations. It had a turret tailstock

I've had quite a few lathes including older grizzly, Enco, clausing, a bunch of south bends and now an M300 Harrison. Learned barrel spinning on a 6913 clausing. My first lathe that was big enough for me to feel comfortable doing barrel work on was a fully restored south bend 10L. Bed ways ground and all. Then went to a clausing 5914 that I didn't like, bought a 6913 clausing that I did all my work on until I recent found the M300. 1977 model. In decent shape, but I sent it out to the machine rebuilder for fresh ways and having him go through everything else as needed. Sold the 6913 in a couple days.

Never ran a PM, but ran a bunch of Chinese and Taiwanese lathes and they are OK.

While the SB 10L is a decent machine, and I still have one as a backup, the M300 is like going from a 1995 v6 mustang to a new Ford GT 40. Everything is easier to use and way smoother, even on my 40 some year old M300. Can't wait till I get it back! Tolerances are night and day.
