grinding noise/feel on bolt lift

I, like some other forum members have been having trouble with my jewell trigger. It is a few years old and probably needed a thourough cleaning. I took the plunge and took it completely apart. I will say that the second time I do this, it will definately go back together alot quicker. I took light sandpaper to any wear marks on the plates, buffed some of the moveable parts lightly and cleaned with lighter fluid, then re assembled and put back in gun (rem 700). Adjusted trigger and the cleaning seems to have fixed the creep problem. Everything works fine except that after I fire or dry fire, the bolt makes a grinding noise and feel when bolt is lifted. Doesnt do it if I cycle bolt once cocked. Bolt was cleaned and re greased behind lugs as per usual. I cleaned the action real good while it was apart. Anybody have ideas what could cause the grinding feel? Thanks.

Did you grease up the area where the firing pin assembly hits the rear of the bolt body.
Sounds like the problem is probably in the bolt assembly, sear area, and not the trigger..

Yep if not done already. I would take the bolt assembly apart and clean, inspect, lube.

Your cocking cam is dry. Take the striker assembly out of the bolt, clean it, the inside of the bolt, and grease the threads that screw into the back of the bolt. Inspect the cocking piece and cam for galling or roughness, polish as necessary, lube cam, and reassemble bolt. Use the same bolt grease that you used on the lugs. Grease the cam and lugs every time you clean the barrel.

Not sure if you guys use a different terminology , but I think you need to check the cocking ramp on the bolt , this is that sideways V shaped area that the striker rides on prior to cocking , I guess you could call it a cam , but not proper in my opinion . Because of the angle it's actually a ramp . At any rate make sure it's not galled and there aren't any imperfections . One other place to check is the bolt shroud , if it's a Rem 700 it could be out of center . I've encountered dozens of these on Rem 700 actions , where the striker actually rides the edges of the shroud , very detrimental to accuracy . This is an area that not too many accuracy smiths pay attention to . Factory actions are what they are , mass produced firearm components .

I always have seen a rifle's firing pin referred to as just that, but when the whole assembly, firing pin, cocking piece, firing pin spring and shroud are together as an assembly, I have commonly seen this referred to as the striker assembly. For example:

Personally, for the purposes of these sorts of discussions, as long as the fellow answering the question understands what I am referring to, I'll settle for that any time.

Bear with us Benjerman08 ... sometimes it's difficult to sort through all the terminology. Makes you wish for an exploded view diagram doesn't it? ;)

English semantic is too much for me...LOL

There could also be a sear engagement question, with the cocking piece bottom bearing against the trigger sear lever during the cocking process, or the same cocking piece not moving freely in the shroud

No problem, I got it taken care of. Yes, I understood the terminology. cocking cam got overly dry with cleaning. Got it all greased and works fine now. Trigger creep is gone too which was original problem. Thanks
