Green Mountain Barrels for club and practice use ONLY

Gents,

I would like to get a club barrel for my 6mm. I've been considering a green Mountain as they can be had cheap for 170 here in Australia. Anyone used them? I'm not chasing 1/4MOA and these would be used to 500-600yds max.

As I said, Club use, Varmints and Practice barrel only. I have a Kreiger as my match barrel and will be ordering a Trueflite later on to replace my Kreiger when the time comes.

Regards,

Shaun

Just my opinion, but what good is practice if you are not trying your best, with the best equipment? If you just want to send bullets down range and make noise, you aren't practicing. You might be having fun, but....

Buy the best equipment you can afford.

I've been working on a few projects. Not wanting to spend BIG $$ ($300+ and months waiting) on a barrel and not be happy with the results of the caliber I chose and the Wildcat round I came up with, I went to Green Mountain Barrels.
Picked up one 20 caliber blank for around $100.00 shipped and got it in about a weeks time. ;D
Thought about it and ordered up another one. Same same. Showed up in about a week.
Both are turning out to be bug hole makers. 5 shots that can be covered with a dime. 8) 8)
Green Mountain has been making barrels for YEARS but the only thing I knew them for was black powder stuff.
2 to 3 + months waiting time from Shilen, PacNor and a few others makes you start thinking about some of the lesser know barrel makers. Maybe lesser know to most folks but still a super good deal and the quality is there along with fast shipping and price. Whats not to like about that?
I can see more Green Mountain barrels in my future. ;)

Thanks a lot Mikie...... for letting the cat out of the bag........now GM will be having a huge B/O list ;D
To paraphrase an old commercial....."GM barrels -they're not just for club matches anymore"

Gents,

Cheers for that. I understand what effendude is saying but yeah. Cost comes into it. When I can get a barrel for 170, chamber job for 250, that's 420 all up for barrel supplied and fitted and a match grade barrel is 500-600 so I can have two practice barrels for the price if one match barrel. Only downside is that they don't come in a 1-8T for 6mm, that stops me shooting the longs with them. And for a varminting/hunting barrel, I don't wanna use my match barrel for that either.

Who knows, I thought I did but there is a thread on here that says Hammer Forged barrels can be just as good! Ha ha ha! I thought about practicing (machining) with some Green Mountain barrels and seeing how it comes out.

Month or so ago, Midway dropped their brand of Adams & Bennet line of barrels, they now sell Green Mountain labeled barrels. Had impression from posts on other gun forum sites that Adams and Bennet barrels were made by Green Mountain for Midway. Years ago, other barrel makers were used by Midway. If this is true, then I have 6 or so rifles with a Green Mountain barrel since I bought my first one around 5 years ago. Decent accuracy with most of them. By decent mean, 1" or so 100 yard groups with them. A couple of them shoot less than 1" 100 yd groups consistently. Yesterday, I had a 6 shot 3/4" group with a F54 contour barrel 7x57 Ruger tang safety rifle at 100 yds. You'd probably find posts someplace complaining about the tendency of their barrels to copper foul badly. Personally, I've not experienced a copper fouling that I considered a problem. At same time, I've read a fair number of posts commenting for an inexpensive barrel they have been surprisingly accurate. For me, I've never had a barrel that I considered bad.....wouldn't shoot worth a hoot and etc.

I believe you will find Adams&Bennett are made by Shaw. I don't know about barrel wait. I just make sure and order 6 months in advance. I guess being around over 70years has taught me this.

I'm in Australia, shilen are twice the price of the green mountains. I'm mainly wanting it for a varminting/hunting barrel. Ill have my spare Kreiger for club use.

If you truly want a substandard barrel for practice use only, you should consider something other than a GM barrel. I have lots of very happy customers who like them very much. I also started using them almost exclusively for my own guns as well. Here is the first 5 shot group shot at 200 yds after breking the barrel in with about 12 shots and cleaning it. But who wants a quater minute gun for practice anyway??

i'm a little confused ! you stated you would shoot up to 600 yds but were not concerned with great accuracy ! what size target will you be shooting at ?

I tried to convince GM of making a 6mm in an 8 twist . I have had my a$$ handed to me by a 6.5 sweede with a GM barrel . They can shoot as well as you can . Even with a 9 twist , They are still tempting

Don't worry about it anymore, just got a 8T maddco from a mate for free. Had a few 243AI through it but still shoots possibles so that's my new varminting barrel.
