Great Saturday afternoon for Grund Sows

After putting the pressure on 3 locations since Memorial Day my kills have dwindled and stalled at 40. I have been wanting to re-evaluate an old location so the time was right as my wife planned a "Girls evening/night" at a friends house. I arrived at the farm and spoke with the Amish owner and I find out its been at least 15 years since I have been there and he runs the farm now and his Father is retired! We had a pleasant conversation as he was rigging up a mule for work and I gained permission to hunt. As I walked down the cow path to the north pasture bordering the train tracks I spotted one but was not interested in going prone due to the chemical makeup of the soil, Cow Poop! I was able to put the brush beneath a high tension tower between us and worked my way to within a 139 yards from it. I extended my bipod and slide out to clear the vegetation, settled the crosshairs and sent one. I was greeted with the familiar thump of the 75 grain A-Max bullet sent from my Savage .223 at 2980 fps from the muzzle hitting flesh. With all the holes at this tower I worked up to the next one to setup so I could watch them. Wasn't long and one emerged from the cornfield next to that tower but did not give me enough time to adapt to my sitting position, read I wasn't prepared, before it made its way to its burrow. I wasn't happy with it and was beating myself up when one showed itself at a mere 90 yards. Having already extended my bipod to the seated length I rotated myself just shy of 180 degrees, aligned the crosshairs and broke the trigger. Again my ears detected a connection prior to recovering from the recoil and verifying with my eyes. Another 10 minutes and there is another looking at me from 50 yards from the fence row bordering the cornfield. I found it it the scope and sent it. Same story, heard then saw! A little later one at 95 yards, then at 66 yards, and then back at 99! I called it quits after 6 in just over 1 hour thinking I stirred things up pretty good. As I walked around I couldn't believe the number of holes leading me to think nobody has bothered them for 15 years! I had a kill zone extending to 270 yards however, much to my chagrin, nothing offered a shot a those ranges. In the immortal words of Arnold Schwarzenegger "I'll be back". FYI- #46 of my 50 goal!
