Great article JB ;-)

Just a quick note of thanks to JB and all the team, thanks for a great article on the 6.5 - 284 keep up the good work with a great website.

I have just had my first 6mmBR barrel fitted and am off the range tomorrow, wish me luck. Hopefully I now have the best of both worlds a switch barrel rig in 6.5-284 and 6BR.

Cheers

Muzza -- much appreciated -- Mr Moderator did a great job as well :thumb:

Though he shouldn't have ruined it with my ugly mug :D :D

Hi

This article interested me a great deal.... Specially the part about barrel life.

So, after lets say 1000 rounds, have the inch taken off and you are saying how much more barrel life you get? As it says, a 30" barrel back to 29" is nothing really, if your gun still shoots!!

I was going for a 6mmAI, but with that knowledge, a 6.5-284 might be the go! still.

Great article I also agree!!!!!!!!!!!

GOOD WORK ALL

pondering setting my barrel back at the end of the season -- ought to be at or just past 1000 by then...

Can't beieve that anyone thought enough of my opinion to actually quote me;). That or Yo was short on material. One thing I will point out is that the quote attributed to me about barrel cleaning was either a mis-quote,not my wording) or a quote from someone else mistakenly attributed to me. I will take credit for the H4350 quote though.

Otherwise kudus to the moderator for a fine article. This is turning into the very best site for matters relating to accuracy and I'm waiting with bated breath for some of the future articles in the mill, especially hearing what Terry Cross has to say.

Rust, sorry about that. 100% my fault, not Jason's. Just a situation of pieces being cut and pasted by a very bleary-eyed editor late at night. That was the tail-end of Fatboy's statement about cleaning. I've made the correction. Thanks for bringing it to my attention.

I can say this however, you'll find a lot of agreement with Fatboy's statement to "keep the throat clean". That's where these 6.5-284s foul out, with hardened carbon), and sometimes nothing but hard scrubbing will get it out.

What's your RL22 load by the way? I'd like to add that to the load map if possible.

Also I just spoke to Terry today. His text is pretty much done, he has to re-shoot some photos however. Here's one tid-bit--he's doing the same thing I'm doing with the 6BR, i.e. using a full-length sizing die,for every loading) with the neck diameter honed to give the precise neck tension he wants. As I observed, this maintains a crisp neck-shoulder junction and helps impede brass flow into the junction area which leads to doughnuts. I've also found that a FL sizing die with just the right neck diameter gives you very consistent bullet seating tension load after load.

Yo - I'll let the load out of the bag with a few caveats. 1st I load considerably over listed COL since I am using a standard length action which frees up a lot of space in the case. 2nd the chamber is a standard Norma chamber which means no tight neck and a little loose on the bottom. 3rd I snuck up on this load and it could be too hot for some rifles.

139 Lapua Scenar
Norma brass, lightly neck turned for uniformity only)
Winchester LR primer
3.080" COL,seated into the lands)
52.5 gr RL-22
2950 fps

This gives velocity, pretty good accuracy and pretty good ES/SD,can't find the log entries just now). It's not quite on the verge of being hot in my rifle, the increase in velocities was in step with the load increases, the primers looked good and the case head expansion is OK. In another rifle it may be too hot a load. Like I said, you will want to sneak up on heavier charges of RL-22. I like to work up loads with a chrono. If I get a velocity increase that is greater than previous velocity increases for the same charge weight increase I know I'm getting out of the linear burn rate range for a given powder and that is someplace I don't want to be, where a half grain on a warm day can cause big problems.

It is also notable for leaving a pretty hard carbon fouling in the first 8-10" of the barrel. Rather than use a brush or paste I'll let the rifle sit with a good carbon fouling cleaner and keep wet patching it thoughout the day. Butches works well although I may try TM at some point.

H4350 leaves a little less fouling and it is softer and cleans up easier.

HI
Guys I seem to be having trouble with the page formatting way off centre and I can only read the first half of the line for the whole of the article??
MY SYS is, IE 6.0.028, XP-PRO SP1. on a stable dial up connection.

Doesn't make sense.

This is one of those little glitches in Internet Explorer. With your browser open to the page, go to VIEW > Text Size > Medium

That should fix it. I'll try to put some tables in place to hold the format even if you have "small" or "smallest" text selected. Medium should be your default, but you may be using smallest if you have a laptop or small screen. FYI, everything on the site will look better with "medium" test selected.

Great article. Having an F-Class rifle built for me at the moment on a Stiller Python action in 6.5-284. Barrel life scares me a bit but if I get the results I wont be complaining.... just good to know there are plenty of people out there who HAVE had good results with this cartridge.
