6.5X47L current information

I am wondering where everybody is up to with this caliber?

What has been found? Pro's and Con's?

I have a 1:8 30" 6.5 barrel that I need to make a decision on. A 6.5-284, or a 6.5X47L??

The 130 bergers is what I am interested mainly out of the 6.5X47L? Velocities?

Maybe I should just stick to the 6.5-284?

Cheers

mate if it was me and you wanted 6.5x47 Velocities of a bit more I'd choose the 6.5x55.
Custers have a nice price on 6.5x55 brass right now.
Lapua 6.5x55 brass is tested to a CIP spec which I believe is higher than the SAMMI spec.
I read somewhere that Lapua 6.5x55 is tested to in excess of 65K pressure.

With a modern action I an quite happy to load my 6.5x55 to 308 pressure levels and i'm finding just a nice amount of primer flattening with a mild load of 2209 and I'm getting great accuracy.

There is a projectile maker in AU called Little he has sent me some 120 VLD HPBT that I want to try out but at the moment my 6.5 is at Shane Clancy's.
Do you have any working 6.5mm rifle ATM I'll send you some to try.

I don't know what you want to get for velocities but I did some chrono workups with the 6.5 x 47 Lapua and the 130 Bergers that is posted on this website:

www.6mmHOT.com

I found the 6.5 x 47 was ideal for bullets in the 120-123 gr range or lighter. When I shot the 130 Bergers, I just felt they pressured up fast in the 6.5 x 47, and I could not get the velocity necessary to offset the benefit I could get from the 120-123's. But try your own testing and see.

Thanks guys..

I feel the 6.5X47L really does not give much extra other than a larger hole over my Dasher.

I was hoping that someone would pipe in and say that it was far better than what they expected, all this and that!!!

The 6.5swed is a nice round, and I suspect that it might be my choice in the ackley Improved version.

I want something a little different than a 6.5-284, but it still needs to compete with it, so hence the AI version of the swed.

I just need to find a reamer spec of the 6.5X55AI now to check it out!

I recently tested the 130 Bergers with Reloader 15,39.2 gr). in 30 in. barrel,8 twist Krieger) got velocities in the low 3000s',3012)
ES & SD in single digits. I will be shooting a match with this load the end of March. The Berger 130 has the same BC,.595) as the Sierra 142 match, so should work out ok.
Good shooting & good luck.

dubya, please post your results. I've got one in the making and I'm collecting load data. Also, thanks Robert for all of your load info, good start for me.

I have had a 6.5x47L going since Christmas. I have found it to be a very versatile round but probably best with the 120-130g range of projectiles.
I am currently using 120g Sierra MK's with great results. Around 38.5g - 2208,varget) for 3030fps with low es and sd.
I used this load at an F Class comp last weekend here in Oz. I was lucky enough to win 2 ranges and the agg.
Ranges shot were 300/500/600 yds.
I have not been able to get the 123 MK's. I will be going back to 123g Lapua's this weekend at my home range to see if I can match the 120 MK's. I have a tuner on this barrel.
Summing up, this 6.5x47 is now as accurate as my 6br, but a fair bit more tuning was required.

Hope this helps,
Cameron in Australia

Is the 6.5X47L .100" longer as in about 50MM? Or does the L stand for Lapua?? A 6.5X47 long or as it would be a 6.5X50 sounds interesting

Thanks

The 130s' shot great at 1,000 yds. Had eight shots inside 4 inches and screwed up on 2,one called & one flyer)both my fault.
If you can hold em it'll shoot.
Good luck & good shooting
Gary.

My last testing in the new "47" was with the JLK 130s, and I got the following:

38.0g RE15
Avg 2957
ES 16.72
SD 5.38

38.4g RE15
Avg 2988
ES 17.69
SD 5.38

Ten shots into .829" at 300 yards.

Going to try the Berger 130s this weekend. The Berger 120s really shot well in my barrel, and I am hoping the 130s will as well.

I have started using 6.5x47 Lapua for 300m shooting at Bisley, England in a Bleiker with a Border barrel, 8 1/2 twist.

Mainly factory ammo in 123gn and 139gn to date to get the cases.

Tried a pressure series with N150 and 35.8gns and 139gn really hit the mark.

Haven't chronoed, but seems far more accurate than 6BR from the shoulder. I used 6.5x55 some years ago and 6.5x47 seems much more accurate.

I'm not a benchrest shooter, so I cannot comment about suitability for that degree of accuracy, but I can only say that this is the best calibre I have ever used for 300m, bar none.

Since the velocity is only 150 fps down on 6.5x284, I would have thought that it would be worth trying for F class given the vastly improved barrel life.
