Greasing lug abutments

An older gentleman showed me to do that many years ago but his explanation was that it was to release spring pressure which makes all kind of sense to me. I've done it ever since

I also hold trigger when I close the bolt on an empty chamber. I do this to relieve spring tension. I was told to do this as leaving tension on the firing pin spring will cause it to weaken if left under tension for long periods of time.
As for grease. Any movement of the bolt will wipe excessive grease from the surface. Grease is design to perform with a thin layer between bearing surfaces under high pressure. Gobs of grease will only serve to collect and build up dirt, carbon dust, etc and will cause you more harm than good as it becomes a sanding media.

Most firing pin springs are installed under tension, don’t think otherwise.

Closing bolt on an empty chamber while holding trigger down will reduce the tension from being cocked, yes.

Belleville washer stacks though don’t suffer from being similarly pre-tensioned when a bolt’s assembled with them to power the firing pin, but they’re an uncommon solution.

sp, 1st I have to chuckle a little. Of course they're installed under pressure. My whole purpose along with "papa charlie" I think is to just treat our equipment as well as we can under every day circumstances.
In other words to completely release all pressure off of the FP spring you would have to take the bolt apart with one tool then take the FP assembly apart with another fixture. Not feasable for me.
The OPs question was about wiping of the grease that we put on the lugs, after watching Greg Tannel's vidieo I was thinking Huh- another advantage but Dusty Stevens dispelled that idea.
Personally I will continue my habit of holding the trigger down on an empty chamber to <easily> release the pressure that my springs have to store (although not all!) for their longevity. Gary Gore
