GRAPHITE CASE LUBE

I have a container of #8 lead shot mixed with Graphite, it was given to me some years ago by a reloading friend, who passed away a few years ago. He highly recommended this mixture to apply to brass cases in order to lubricate during the reforming process for 7mm TCU and .256 Win Mag and some others that I re-form. I have some Graphite but it is a very fine powder and a very dull grey/black, I believe it is made for use in art as a charcoal coloring and does not appear to have that flake and shine appearance the graphite/shot mixture has. I have checked with a number of reloading suppliers but no luck yet. I use the RCBS case lube for standard sizing, that sticky honey consistency lube but, that can cause hydraulic case compression when re-forming brass, the mixture of shot and that graphite is the best I have ever used. Any recommendations as to where I might locate the flake type used to lube cases?

Regards,

Don

Don I've used the stuff for years on the inside off the necks to help with seating the bullets, Just dip the neck in a few times then wipe the outside of the neck with a paper towel. And yes Sinclair has it.

Why change to a different form of graphite if he current shot graphite you use is the best stuff ever.

If it works, yuo want to think hard before you fix it.

I believe he used the lead shot to help put on the graphite. I believe NECO or somebody sells a kit with moly and shot in it. I also believe graphite is graphite. Even if it is white or black it is a lube. I would think finer is better. Maybe what he had wasn't graphite in the shot. Matt

Howdy !

I pick-up powdere graphite from NAPA, where it is offered as a dry lube for brake " shoes ".

Seems to do just fine.

Thanks for your reply and remarks. I will have to do some checking around the WWW, none of the big hardware stores around here have it. I will have to contact Sinclair and see what they might have.

Redding sells that nasty messy awful stuff you are asking about under the name Imperial dry neck lube. Locksmiths use it--it used to be a joke that you could tell a locksmith by his black fingers. Not exactly the way the joke went back then but edited to be PC for today.

Frankford arsenal sells, or at least used to sell "White Graphite" which is powdered mica and does the same job without anything like the mess of regular black graphite.

I have both stored away in a box somewhere.........

A guy I shoot with on occasion uses Lock-Ease mixed with #8 shot in an old 35mm film container. After the carrier flashes off all that's left is the graphite coated shot. He claims it works as well if not better then other dry lubes.

Dunno.

When I looked for it, I was always looking for a container that said dry flake graphite, microfine flake graphite or just flake graphite. It is readily available in a bunch of brands and container sizes (from .21 oz tubes to 1 pound cans) from Amazon.com if no local hardware store or auto supply house near you has it.
