I went back to the golf course this morning looking for a good size ghog I saw near the exit road on Tuesday as I was leaving. I set up about 125 yards from where I saw it last and waited. I don’t know how long it was, but it was a long time until it finally appeared. I was sort of ready, but not completely because I don’t want to stick out like a sore thumb as cars drive by the main entrance road up to the clubhouse. So it took me a couple of minutes to get in position with the Marlin 17 HMR.
Almost to the second that I’m ready to pull the trigger, a maintenance guy shows up to mow the green. Exit the ghog. Nuts!!! So now I’m waiting for the guy to finish and for the ghog to reappear. Again, a lot of time goes by until the ghog comes out. This time I’m in a slightly different spot and I’m ready. But again, another maintenance guy comes screaming by on a golf cart and the hog takes off, again. Rrrrrr!!!
Now I’m in that waiting mode again, looking around while doing so and I spot a head sticking up on the other side of a small rise to my right. I get on my knees to use the seat of the golf cart as a rest, put the crosshairs on its ear and bingo, it’s gone. I stand up, but there’s nothing there. I walk up a hill to my rear to see if I can see it, but nothing. As I continue to climb, I glance off to my left at the edge of the fairway and see a shadow in an opening of the woods. So I get down in the prone position and see a ghog fade into the blackness. I range the distance to 60 yards and wait. A couple of minutes later a fairly good size hog appears out of the woods. I figure he’s coming out the graze, but he seems more intent on heading somewhere. I keep the crosshairs on him and when he faces me I squeeze off a 20 grain hollow point. The ghog buckles, but runs down the hill in the direction where I lost the other one. He’s gone too!
I got up and walked over to the place of the disappearing ghogs and find a metal drainage pipe. Both these hogs managed to disappear into this sanctuary, probably never to be seen again. Oh well.
This is getting very frustrating! I go back to the golf cart and, what else, wait. I’m looking around again still hoping the ghog I came here for shows up. Here we go again. As I’m looking to my right I see the head of another ghog almost in the exact same spot as the other two. This one doesn’t move and I pop him in the ear. Hallelujah, a confirmed kill. It just a pup, but one less golf course hog. Here it is.
I’m back in the golf cart and within minutes, there’s a ghog dead ahead at about 30 yards. Very slowly I get the gun up and put the crosshairs on its ear and fire. It goes down, but I can’t see it. So I walk over and find it lying at the opposite end of the metal drain pipe. I figure this is the first one I saw that pulled a Houdini on me. Vengeance is mine. Here are the pictures, the drainage pipe and the DRT. ;D
Back in the golf cart doing you know what and in my peripheral vision I see this ghog hot footing it across a parking lot, over the main road, into a small ditch, back up and headed straight for the metal drain pipe where I just shot the other hog at 30 yards. He never slowed down so I had no shot!
What is the Grand Central Station???
It’s now been four hours since I got to the course and I have not seen my main quarry again. I’m out of here until next time. I have a new stratedgy for this guy and it involves the Savage in 22-250 or the 204.
I’ll be back!!! 8)
