GOUT

I am sure most of you old guys have suffered with gout. Doc's have had me on Prednisone and Colchicine it gives me relief but a soon as I quit taking it the gout flares back up. Been suffering for 3 months, first in a finger and now it has migrated to both feet. Ice seems to help but is not a cure. Anybody got a home remedy that helped? I take supplements that are supposed to help, Vit C, Turmeric, cider vinegar, magnesium. I've even quit drinking!!!
Diet can play a big part if flare ups. Have you consulted a dietitian recommended by your doc?

My wife suffered from this for several years. Her uremic acid levels were high normal, so she didn't exhibit the classic cause and effect issue. Hers was induced by a diuretic she was taking for high blood pressure. Once she stopped taking the diuretic, her symptoms disappeared.

As others have said, soda and beer are particularly bad for gout. Also drinking a lot of water helps. But your best source of advice is from a specialist that specializes in gout treatment. This is how we found out about the diuretic.

I'm starting to suspect diet soda is the cause of all kinds of inflammatory symptoms. As well as urinary issues.

Diet Gatorade might even be worse.
Yes, artificial sweeteners have numerous side effects. I'd rather have a little sugar, at least your body knows what to do with that. As the old adage goes, everything in moderation. I don't trust food companies any more than the pharmaceutical companies ;)

Its already been said a few times, but tart cherry juice works well for me to make it go away. Tastes disgusting, but makes the gout go away.

Suffered with gout for years before my doctor realized I had it. Last 12-15 yrs I have been taking 300 mg of Allopurinol with great results. Once in a long while I feel it coming on and take colchicine to stop it. When taking colchicine don't stray too far from a toilet.

I have been on daily Allopurinol for 20+ years. With zero flare ups.

Before that, for 6 weeks I stopped everything on the list that supposedly causes gout. Uric acid levels were the same. Tried tart cherry juice- no help.
In some people your body produces too much U.A. and in some you can't get rid of enough U.A.
A blood test will determine your U.A. levels, and if you have gout or pseudo gout {caused by calcium crystals}.
And on the kidney stones, if you are on Allopurinol and don't drink enough water, you will get them.

I suffered several flare up’s years ago and did a lot of reading/research. The high purine foods were the initial target then I found some research that suggested a high carb/sugar diet elevated uric acid levels as much or more than bacon and all those other ‘evil’ purine rich foods. After restricting sugar and carbs, even going full carnivore loaded w/ homemade bacon and lots of venison and beef I not only lost weight, I had no more issues with gout. Just my experience.

Everyone I know who's had gout before all the testing managed to tie it back to cured meats, the nitrites or whatever that is in them. If they kept their intake of those (mostly cured bacon) very low and never back to back days they didn't usually have re-occurrence. They still felt it and you could see it in how they got around, but they didn't get the can't get around for days gout.

Myself I have no idea if I've had gout, but I know I have serious problems with my knees and ankle joints if I eat too much pork, doesn't seem to matter if it's cured or not but certainly cured take far less to cause the same feelings. So I just watch how much I eat, don't eat it back to back days, more like every 3rd day or less seems to work fine for me. Eating half what I used to along with this allows me to enjoy what I love and no build up and pain. Of course this really goes back to the everything in moderation motto. We eat a lot of meat each week, but nowadays we really try to assure we have lots of fruits and vegetables mixed in. Watch salt intake, and very little sugar in cooking/baking and zero pop or similar. Almost no processed foods, we cook or prep almost everything now. Life is good when sticking to this and the grocery bill is far less too.

The best natural thing I found is stinging nettle tea. It makes a big difference and fast. Tastes like old weeds from the backyard. Have something to wash it down with, lol. As soon as I feel it coming on stinging nettle tea and colchicine are the first things I take. Since a major diet change I haven’t had it in a couple years.

Add turkey, venison, spinach, gravy, to the long list. Red meat and venison are what creeps up on me. I quit turkey except once or twice a year, same with gravy. I love spinach, but only raw on a salad, no more cooked. Went from two baby spoons of sugar to one in morning coffee. I eat more chicken and fish, and high protein snacks.

Naproxen will take the edge off, far more than aspirin or ibuprofen. However, it can jack up your blood pressure.

I don’t think people can really appreciate gout until ya get it in a big toe that hurts more the more you look at it. Or an ankle that forces you to break out the crutches.

this is all a fairy tale, rich poor does not matter. Gout is a buildup of uric acid in your body, it crystalizes in your muscles somewhere usually if the feet but, it can be anywhere. when you get a "flare up" it's like a sea urchin with all those little spikes in your muscle. it can be bad enough to murder someone to get relief! high dose of MOTRIN will kill a flare up and it safe, they give women 1000 MG doses of it for menstrual cramps. so it's safe. but since I have been taking Allopurinol I have not had a flare up, all the diet suggestions are just "old wives tales" get to an arthritis doctor and they will fix you up almost ALL heart meds have Allopurinol in them, the last place you want your gout to settle in is your heart!

The Uric acid crystals are in your joints, not muscles.

I’ve been on allipurinol for several years. No issues since I started it. Uric acid levels have been low for a long time and I’ve actually cut back to taking it just a couple times a week.
