I want to mount a globe sight to the front of my prone sling rifle - a little context, it's cobbled together and I'm very cheap / DIY. The rifle is a Savage BVSS, with a criterion 6BR barrel, and an Anchutz rail added to the forearm. It shoots great, and I'd rather not headspace the barrel again if I can help taking it off...
Which leads me to the first option, which is cutting a 0.750 tennon at the muzzle, and mount a clamp. I can take the barrel off and bring it to the local makerspace, and ask a student machinist to lathe it down in exchange for a six pack. But how would they center it? Would the crown need to be redone?
Second option, me take a hand file and make a flat, and screw down a dovetail riser. It sounds rough, but I think I could do an OK job. Center punch and drill press for the mounting holes, to control depth. Thoughts?
