good 221 brass ? were to buy

I am trying to find some quality 221 fireball brass not junk remington brass that is all I can find if you know were to get any please let me know

Rider, as far as I know, Remington 221 is the only game in town. Do yourself a favor, if you're a reloader, buy the forming dies from Redding and some Lapua 222 or 223 brass and make your own. Once made, you can't wear it out. Looks like jewelry once done.

I know (from what I've heard) that Remington brass in the BR form is not the greatest (compared to Lapua) but it's real good in the .221 Fireball. That's all I use. And after 15 to 20 reloads, it's still going strong. Maybe one out of 100 might get a split neck but that's from working the brass over time. Not sure if anybody else makes it.

I shoot a bunch of XP-100's chambered for the 221 Fireball and never have any problems using Remington brass in any of them... most of them are on the 12th
loading and they are still working just fine.. but I do anneal them every 4th time out..

I've never had a problem with the Rem brass and I use it in my 221 FB, 20 VT and 17 Mach IV. Shoots well enough I certainly wouldn't go to the trouble of forming it out of 223 brass.

Regards
RJ

rider_hunter, i think you may have gotten some bad info on R/P 221 brass,
I have been using it for years in xp100 and 40x custom rifles. as with all brass, i clean flash hole, sort by weight, fire form, trim and then shoot - i consistantly get .200" out of 40x and this can not be with bad brass, just don't by bulk from someone who may have mixed lots of production, by the same lot

rp brass is what I have now and what I don't like about rp brass it first the shoppy too large flash hole my reamer won't even touch the brass there so large the primer pockets and very inconsistant the necks by the time I turn them to get them true they are very thin and then if I weight sort it is amazing how much they vary I am a lapua fan so I may just get the dies to make my own

What make / model rifle is it?

If it's a factory chamber, odds are the flash hole size will never be noticed on target.
Proof of this is the on-going controversy about the 6.5 x 47 L ,large vs. small primer?........and this is with data from all-out comp guns.
Also, turning necks for a factory chamber usually results in poorer on target performance.

I also am a Lapua fan, but I know their previous batch of .222 brass was rather poor ...at 3x the cost of Remington brass.

What matters is this brass truly affecting your rifles accuracy as compared to previous lots of brass?
PPC shooters routinely turn necks to as thin as .008 wall with no effect in accuracy.
There is also a good chance that just a partial clean-up on necks will result in the same accuracy as previously experienced.
Bottom line is what loss (if any) in accuracy will you experience with this lot of brass. Only the target will tell.

rider_hunter: Midway master catalog #33, page 36: Nosler Custom 221 Rem. Fireball factory loaded ammunition, product # 283-779. Box of 50 for $65. As a source of reloadable brass, pricey, but actually less than loaded Remington at $28.50 for a box of 20. On the "brass for reloading" page 407, Remington still listed is the only supplier.

In a custom .221 FB using prepped Rem brass I can shoot .5moa @ 200 yds all day long providing the weather is favorable. Better brass "may" be capable of tightening these groups a bit but the groundhogs probably wouldn't notice the difference. ;D

If it's .221 headstamp, nobody else makes it and you're stuck with Remington. I don't particularly care for Rem. brass, however as a Fireball it's worked ok.....accuracy load in my gun is a 40 @ a moderate 3450, other people are getting more. As MIV that Rem. brass hasn't been very good.....accuracy load is at higher pressure and every trip will lose several primer pockets. A friend had similar problems with his MIV brass and made a bunch of it from IMI .223. Now he's getting higher velocity with no primer pocket loss. I'm doing a bunch of IMI to .221 and MIV. It's a lot of work. Lapua makes strong brass and it would be real nice if they started doing Fireball.

I have a fireball and a set of conversion dies to convert 223 rem into fire ball...I have had better groups with the converted LC and WIN 223 REm brass than the RP 221FB brass. Takes a little time to form trrim and neck turn but it is my hobby and I like the results.

Hey, fd, if you buy some of that Nosler Custom 221 ammo, guess what? The brass is still R-P headstamp. Sorry, but it appears that Remington is the only game in town for factory made 221. The Nosler does shoot pretty good in a short throated chamber, though. I'm not getting BR accuracy out of my 221's so far, but the Rem brass has behaved pretty well & seems reasonably strong. Playing around with Lil'Gun was able to get close to 3700 fps w/ 40 gr bullet before the primer pockets started giving up. That load will get backed down a ways ;D.
