Gonna go for a new Dasher build - some questions please

Hello,

I posted on here awhile about considering a 6 Dasher build. I just sold a rifle and now it's that time to get things planned out and get this thing in line for production.

I have most things squared away but the barrel, and reamer specs.

I'm thinking a Krieger 8 twist barrel? I like bartlein 5r on my other tactical rifles, but see a lot of guys using Krieger 4 groove on the Dasher? Lastly for the barrel, what bore diameter is most recommended.

I will be using the following to develop the most accurate load. 105 vld seems high recommended, 107 SMK -seems the newer ones are also good. I've always had good results with lapua so I'll try the 105 scenar, and lastly seems like it's hit and miss - the 105 Berger Hybrid. My 338 Lapua loves the 300 hybrids.

Any bullets I missed here for 600 and 1000 yard group shooting?

Last of all, the reamer specs. I see guys saying no turn - some say turn. 272-271 to ones in the high .260s. This is where I can't make up my mind. I like brass prep so which one is most beneficial for accuracy. Seems the consensus is the no turn neck with skim turned brass may be just as good as a turn neck chamber?

What freebore to I want for the bullets listed above? I would think at least .125 FB.

Sorry for a long post with many questions, but I'm really stuck on these decision and figure it may be an easy answer for guys who have been around the Dashers for some time now using these components. I just wanna do it right the first time with no regrets.

Thanks for any help,

Alan

What do you plan to use it for and what level of accuracy are you seeking? I will tell you no less free bore than .135. There are quit a few bullets you missed but i need to know plan on with it…….. jim

I'm seeking the highest accuracy possible but am not really sure what specs will work best. I shoot prone a lot and just want something to shoot tiny groups in good conditions. As I said, I have a 338 Lapua that is still a hammer with nearly 1400 rounds down the tube. I shot it the other day at 1k and had two 5 round groups 3.1" and 4.1" with maybe 1.5" vertical so that's good enough for me. Shot prone with bipod and rear bag.

I just read everything about the inherent accuracy, etc. of the dasher in good conditions, so I figure everyone can't be wrong.

I will likely be having GAP build this on a defiance LH action with mcmillan stock and it will be able to be mag fed from AI mags if needed. I will likely single feed but like having that option.

I want the Dasher for those nice calm mornings to try and shoot tiny groups all the way out to 1000. This would be a perfect caliber for this? Or so I think.. lol This is the final niche in my collection that is missing - something just extremely accurate.

Johara, I see you post on here a lot so you know your stuff. What do you think? Looking for barrel, reamer specs, and bullets i may have missed.

This should be epic and worthy of sticky status. :) Jim please don't leave out any details.

just finished my 3rd build.
I went with a 28.75'' bartlien 1.25 straight tube on a bat b action. reamer specs are
.2704 neck, .130 fb@ .2438. loaded round neck dia is .2665. Jewell trigger in fclass stock. all ff loads shoot into a little hole ;D

That's an understatement. Read this to see who it is that is trying to assist you:

If you are going for all out accuracy why wouldn't you do a chamber for a full turn so the bullet is absolutely centered in the case? I run a .266 neck but a .268 neck would probably clean all the way. You need at least .135 freebore for the 105 class of bullets. I use .155. Bullets missed should include Vaper Trail if you want another good bullet. As for barrels I had both bores work well. Most of mine are .237. I have seen Kriegers work really well and some Bartleins. I use Broughton. Hope this helps. Matt

Thanks guys! The replies are helping me a lot. I can't wait to get this thing ordered ;D. I think it will fit the bill perfectly of what I'm looking for.

You won't need anything faster than an 8 twist unless you plan on shooting the 115's. I also would suggest a .135 FB a .2438 FB dia and a .268 neck. As for bore dia of the tube a prefer the .236 bores myself.

I'm gonna get the barrel ordered in the next few days. Gonna go with Krieger. I've always used 5r in my other rifles but seems most use 4 groove in the BRS and Dashers? Any preference? I've been reading on the bore diameters as well and it seems .237 is used alot with some saying .236 is better for skinnier lapua bullets? I'd say flip a coin?

I'm anxious to get stuff ordered! Are the Whidden micrometer 6 Dasher dies good to go?

Alan

I'm going with 7.5 - 7.75 Twist 237 bore and I guess 4 groove rifling. What's a good micrometer seating die out there for this? I got some $$ to get stuff in line while I wait maybe 8 months for build lol.

although I don't have a dasher, I have a straight 6 BR. Krieger barrel, .236 bore 5R 8" twist 27.25" finished. this thing shoots! I wouldn't change anything about it.

Get a Stainless Wilson with micrometer top for a 6BR. Have the Dasher reamer ran in. Matt

I think I'll get the Wilson 6 Dasher micrometer seating die and an arbor press. This is new to me, never used these lol

Why not just get the Wilson micrometer seater that is already configured for the 6 Dasher?

Generic fit verses a custom fit..... is my input.
With improvement to runout and seating consistency being my reason.

"Off the shelf/generic fit" dies are not for me with my custom built rifles. I want EXACT and determined fits for minimal sizing, concentricty, and seating gains. To much is left on the table in many circumstances by going the cheaper and/or readily available routes with generic fits - IMO

Seen it a few times, where someone has spent $$$$.$$ on a custom built rifle, and give up small portions of accuracy by not getting the most out of there brass and loaded rounds, because they take the dies for granted.

Donovan and Jim,

Would you consider Harrels FL die, that they match to your cartridge a better choice than one of the off the self brands like a redding/forster, Are whidden dies close to custom?
