>>>>>Going Wolf Hunting in Idaho.... or BUST<<<<<

@ Flouncer,.. YUP , you got that, right, Stay / BE,.. in shape ! I wear my Clothes, in "Layers" ( Lighter stuff on, when walking, to NOT get sweaty, and then,.. Freeze when, stopped ! ) I carry, a Puffy Jacket, warm Gloves/ Mittens and Puffy type Pants in my XO Pack, then put them on, when sitting on a 1 inch thick Foam pad ! For Elk hunting on, LATE Hunts, I have, Waterproof, heavily Insulated, Meindl Boots,.. Winter Hunting, gets EXPENSIVE, LOL !
@ Daniel brothers,.. The 7mm Mag with, 140's should be a nice, Flat shooting, Wolf killing, Rig ! The PRC is tough to get Brass, Powder and Ammo for, right now as, it's a very Popular Cal. ! My grandson HAS one and WHY, I know this ! A 6.5 Creed or PRC with, the 135 Berger, Hunting/ Classic's would be an awesome round for Mr Wolf ! I have, 2 Left Handed, SS T-3, Tikka's , a .270 WSM that, shoots about, 3/4 MOA with 140 AccuBonds going 3,150 ish and a .243 Win. that shoot's, 87 Berger HVLD's going 3,140 FPS and shoots them, in, the high .2's - low .3's ! So NOPE, neither are for sale ! Got real Lucky with, finding that, .243 Win ! I also have, a LH Rem 700, in .22-250 but, it's NOT, a long range, Wolf slayer, IMHO ! Good Luck on your Hunt !

If a guy was to hunt NW Mt and NE Idaho between Christmas and New Year when there’s quite a bit of snow in the higher country is a snowmobile about the only way to access some of that land?

Would a guy walk in after riding in away?

Is it possible to find them on public land or so the elk go to private land and take the wolves with them?

@Idaho-Lefty @Flouncer

YES, a Snowmobile would be, NICE when, the Snow gets over, a Foot deep ! Drive it up some dirt Roads, then walk back IN, the Canyons on snow shoes ! IF the snows gets, 3 or 4 Feet deep,.. head Lower, as the Deer/ Elk usually won't be, that High ! Remember WHAT, the Wolves,.. EAT !
Wolves don't know, boundaries and the difference between, Public / Private Land ! They LOVE Sheep, on Private, land ! They Killed a bunch of Sheep on Private land, in the Council area, a some years, back, but only ate, 3 or 4 ! They just had FUN killing, the other, 25 or so ! WE the Tax Payers, paid for those Sheep AND the Gover'mt Hunters, to Kill those, "bad" Wolves ! Wolves, are scattered all over the State, except in SOME areas of, the Desert. They "Range" from just North of, Mountain Home / Idaho City area to the Canadian Border.

I lived in Alaska for three years out in Bristol Bay, we worked long hours in the summer but in the winter we had lots of time to play. One of my favorite things to do was fire up the snow machines and get way back into the back country hunting wolves, wolverines and other predators but the focus was wolves. we would see their tracks all over and in the next valley we wouldn’t see a track, they have big home ranges, a pack of wolves can cover a tremendous amount of ground. The guy that let me tag along was born and raised there, he had a knack for finding wolves. His best trick was taking a old hand crank siren and cranking it as loud as he could, think Fire Dept Siren, if wolves could hear that They almost always answered back. Once they were located we would drive to high points and glass and then move to another vantage point and glass again. He would never use the siren more than once in a given area. This was back in the early ninties by the way. Even though we were out in the middle of nowhere the wolves were surprisingly wary, it’s like they had a sixth sense. My advise would be to read up on how to locate them before the sun comes up, either by howling or finding other sounds that they will answer. I’ve used that siren trick to locate coyotes too. I’d get up on places you can glass and I’d be patient, if your not seeing tracks that doesn’t mean they aren’t there, they cover a lot of ground. If you have enough snow you may want to glass for tracks, we used that method and would often glass wolf tracks up near the open tops of ridges and high places. If there is a season then you can rest assured that those wolves have heard every kind of a varmint call sold, I would experiment and use different sounds, different volumes and if you choose to call I would caution you to call for 60 seconds or so and then wait, watch and listen... then after 3-4 minutes do another short call and wait watch and listen.... just keep an open mind and pay attention to the sign. Good luck! I hope you fill every tag you buy, they are getting to be a serious problem here in Arizona too, that plus we just made a lion season Instead of being able to hunt them all year and have quotas now, the lion population here is growing fast. Between the wolves and the lions are big game numbers are gonna decline in a big way over the next years.

Some of the game management areas, the hunting units, have very well defined and specified vehicle use and trail use controls for hunting. These are designed to prevent the hordes of city blasting elk hunters from running amok on ATV and even 4x4 vehicles. Driving game away, ever away and stressing them. Cliff notes, many roads and trials are closed to engine powered vehicles during certain times. Take a look at your Idaho hunting regs and get booked up. Good luck.

I’d say bait the wolves. I think it is not legal to remove road kill in some states. Not sure but I heard that somewhere. Maybe some ranchers have some dead cattle?

I got off my old dead ass this morning , drove the jeep up the mountain and hiked into an area , I've been looking to place a call.
We have loads of Deer but this area has a 30 ish head of Elk. Sure enough I found the Elk and was watching real quiet like from a couple hundred yards with a light breeze in my face when somehow the lead cow turned and looked right at me ....Busted'''...
Anyway the point is that after searching the now vacant valley for over and hour I found Zero paw prints.

DB,

If you get a chance, pick up the Spring 2021 issue of Range Magazine.
P76 you will find a good artcle by Marjorie Haun. Sounds like you may want to save a few "aces" for Colorado.
