>>>>>Going Wolf Hunting in Idaho.... or BUST<<<<<

You Guys have seen my threads about wanting places to hunt coyote, but after learning more about the wolf problem in Idaho as well as other Western States... my focus has changed. I understand the problem wolves are causing to ranchers, but what really BURNS me is what they are doing to the Big Game. I'm not going to be focused on trying to get some kind of trophy...NOPE... I want to help level the playing field against this threat.... which is getting worse by the minute. I have the time and the money to dive right into the middle of this mess and say..." Here I am.. what can I do to help" But before I take off half cocked, I thought I'd start a thread for any helpful tips or suggestions. Thanks Guys....Dan

With much to learn I have just begun to hunt Wolves here in Libby, we can pull 5 tags a year. I have a decent amount of tracks out back and sometimes through the property killing the Elk is their MO so find the Elk you will find the Wolves tracks, they are ghosts yet they are there.
A lifelong tracker ; (Wolf tracks look like big dogs but they move with purpose)
I’ve seen this to be reasonably true, good luck- we 21 packs over 600 wolves in the NW Montana Idaho area

Maybe order a dvd called, "Crying Wolf" by JD King. One really great documentary by a young man that grew up near Wisdom, MT.
Then read, "The Real Wolf" by Ted B Lyons & Will Graves.
Important to "know your enemy."

There are a lot of wolves in central Idaho but don't be surprised if you don't see them. Before there was a hunting season on them they were seemingly everywhere but they wised pretty quickly. There is a good chance that if you see one it will be a butt shot because they likely will see you before you see them and they will be running away.

Don't be afraid to try calling them in with a Fox pro. I have shot 2 wolves this way both times using coyote pup distress calls. Other guys in my area who are very avid wolf hunters also use a foxpro to call them in. That and drag some road kill onto a frozen lake and wait is probably the best way to shoot them. Most times when I go out I see tracks and not wolves. They are super smart and very difficult to see let alone shoot. I believe the wolves in Idaho were transplanted from where I live in 2003 or at least some were for sure. Last year the Government shot over 400 wolves in my area from a helicopter over the winter to try and save the mountain Caribou herds or whats left of them. There is wolves to hunt within a half hour drive from my house all year round and I have went out many many times targeting them and have only shot two. Not easy that's for sure.

I think as far as I know you still can't us Elelectronic calls in Montana on wolves. There classified as a game animal. STUPITY!

If I were to hunt wolves, I would be out at least an hour before first light with a howler trying to get a response. They can cover incredible distances in just one day but this method would at least get you in the same zip code! Good luck!

Great information Guys.... it's greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm in the Internet Wolf Hunting Class 101. Gotta get all the education possible until real world reality hits you in the face...LOL.

These things are super crafty by themselves...and now you have to get past 8-12 sets of noses and eye balls in order to get one...WOW... talk about a challenge.

GOOD LUCK! kill them ALL!

GOOD LUCK! kill them ALL!
1,000 Thumb's,. . way,.. UP !!! These ARE,.. Canadian, Tundra Wolves and are NOT, Native to Idaho / Montana / Wyo ! DO WISH that, they'd eat STUPID Liberals,.. instead of,.. our Moose, Elk and Deer !
Sorry IF, I hurt someones feelings ! SERIOUSLY,.. I DON'T,.. "care" !
5 Tags per person = about, 40 dead ones,.. HOPEFULLY ( SSS ) ! Good Luck and shoot,.. STRAIGHT !

Might call, F & G or a Biologist to see IF, Yellow Pine, the Warm Lake area or around, Idaho City, still have good numbers of Wolves. Leave, the "small guns",.. HOME ! Flat shooting, hard hitting, Cal's like,. .243 Win., 6XC, 6 BR, etc,. are Minimum with,.. good expanding, Varmint HP's, V-maxes, Berger's,.. BEST !
Bring Snow Shoes ! Try to find Elk bedding Areas and Hunt Wolves, in the Timber,.. above, them !
Bring Howlers and Calls, a Foam Pad to Sit on, WARM Clothes / Socks, Water Proof Boots, a Hunting Pack to rest the Gun's "Toe" on and good, Shooting sticks as, 200 to 500 yard shots, from, the SITTING position, might be, necessary ! IF,. I was 33 instead of 73,.. I'd go with you ! Walking the Mountains in a foot of Snow tires me out ! Did kill an Elk at, age of 71 on, the late Dec Elk Hunt, in Arizona ! After 4 Days of TRUDGING around in a foot of Snow I was about,.. done !

Those things are scary. Can you imagine how a calf size animals feels with a pack of those killers growling, barking, and biting it.... WOW... I can't even imagine the HORROR those animals must go through.

Those are some very good tips there Idaho Lefty. I am taking notes on all good information and tips. Since your a lefty as I am... you got any lefty wolf hunting rifles you want to sell me? My main rifle will be my Tikka Hunter T3 in 7 mag with 140 or 160 gr bullets.... am working on making it a consistent shooter out to at least 600 yds... and I'll bring my 22-243AI with 80 gr amaxes which is already set up for long range... but I'd just like to have a little better bullet weight caliber. Brent over on LRH Forum has me thinking hard about putting together a 6.5 PRC with 135 gr bullets. But putting something together right now with the big shortages might be impossible. So if you guys hear of something floating around out there for sale.. let me know... because I'm hoping and planning on heading Westward for Jan and Feb.... even if I am 69 yrs old... I don't feel it... more like 40...well more like 50.... or maybe somewhere in that area... LOL.

Thanks to all you Guys for your input... it's appreciated.
May Jesus Bless you...ALL.

Dan

I believe that you are overthinking this. If a 7 Rem Mag with a well placed shot won't kill any wolf in America, I'll eat my shorts!

Are electronic (not hand or vocal) calls legal in Idaho for wolf ?? As far as I know other electronic devices like drones are not for "Big Game" ie deer, antelope and elk. A licensed guide would know for certain.

edit: page 97 of the 19/20 regs states electronic are legal for grey wolf in season and tag.

Wolf Calls

Hope that helps. .. . .

Light weight bullets in a creedmoor will get it done real quick, I had a wolf looking at a doe a couple weeks ago as I was hopping out of the jeep she saw me and hauled ass out of my sight before I could get a shot.
I figured her and her pup were hanging around cause I've seen their tracks then sure enough we were eye to eye

Thanks for the info there ... Flouncer.

I have a 6.5 creed, but it's a savage FV 26" heavy barrel... might be too heavy to lug around... but I'm open to screwing on a carbon 6.5 PRC barrel... it I could just my hands on one.... new or used.
