Going to try the 30BR to 500

Going to try the 30BR at the local groundhog shoot, never shot over 200 yards, so this is going to get interesting.

In the class in the class I'll be shooting, the ranges are 200, 300, and 500 yards. I'm shooting BIB 118 gr 10 ogive bullets, at roughly 3000 FPS,no Chrono, going by specs in the 30BR Info page).

Roughly how much elevation in the scope am I going to need to hit the 500 yard target?

What is the BC of the 118 gr 10 ogive? I could probably get pretty close with a published drop chart if I knew that.

I want to make sure I have that much elevation in the scope available before I go- -once shot a rimfire match holding partway onto the next target above. It wasn't much fun, especially on the top 2 targets!

Mate sounds like you are following my path have just done this myself.
You need to wind up about 11&3/4 inches from a 100 yard Zero just remember once at 500 each 1/4 inch is 1&1/4 inches on the target at 500 thats why i have an 1/8th click scope.
Had a think and went and did a recalculate for you as the measurements i gave you were for 500M at 500Yards you will have to wind up 9 and 1/2 inches

Wow - 500 yard stuff is fun! Wind, Wind, Wind. Got to learn to read the wind. Shot at a local "ground hog" match, basicly a score shoot, 5 shots for score at 200, 300, and 500 yards. No wind flags, 7 minutes for the 200 & 300 yard, and 9 minutes for the 500 yard, with unlimited sighters.

Wound up 5th of 17 shooters in my class, with a 131/150, 3X. Felt real rushed at the 200 yard starting target, as I didn't have a timer along,note to self for next time)- -Shot a 47/50, 2X on the 200 yard, felt I should have done better there. Shot a 47/50 1X @ 300, and 37/50 on the 500 with a 4.9" group. I didn't feel undergunned with a 30BR @ 500.

Dope worked pretty well- -Randy Robinett supplied a BC of .35 for his BIB 118 Gr, I estimated 3000 fps, then I looked at the Nosler tables and got -7.5" for 300 from a 200 yard zero, and -46" for 500 yards,50 clicks is a lot to count under pressure). Dialed it in before each round, and I was on paper, or close enough that I could get on target with a few clicks. I dialed in 15 clicks in windage at the 500 yard target, it was a bit windy out there.

Back to the wind- -there was a natural wind flag in front of my target- -a maple sapling looked like it was about 25 yards in front of my 500 yard target, blowing around, and would actually obscure my sighter target at times. I even tried to shoot it off at one point. Idiot me- -should have been using it as a flag. Things you think about on the way home. And learing to wait for a condition.

Also got to see a bullet trace for the first time, was watching a guy in another relay shoot his 300 wsm @ 500. Awesome stuff!

That's what i like about my Bosch & Lomb i don`t have to count clicks if i need to go up 2 inches i wind it up 2 inches it is marked clearly so if i am on the fist mark after the 1 i am 10 clicks up and they are 1/8th clicks means i am on at 200 yards wind on another 5 or so inches and i am on at 400 yards no need to count just read off the numbers.
So what do you reckon Gollum the 30BR good enough for you to have another go.
I know it is for me and will be shooting 500 again in July have the short 100 and 200yards Hunter nationals 10th 11th 12th June.

Well am back from the Hunter/Class nationals here in Australia didn`t fare very well came 6th every shooter in front of me i think was a hall of fame member or had represented Australia in benchrest lately so don`t feel too bad first major comp with the 30BR and had problems with elevation as the Seaham range is very uphill and had my rest maxed out with timber blocks under the front legs as i have the tracker style stock and is deep may have to modify to lowrider style.
