Going back to school to become a gunsmith?

Hello Gents

I am considering several alternatives after I end my army time, and one of them is going back to school to become a gunsmith.
I figured it might be cool to do this in the USA. I live in Norway.
I'm mostly interested in sniper rifles and Pistols, 1911.. ), and I am at a fairly high level of knowledge when it comes to weapons. I am however not very skilled with a lathe, yet.

If I do this I'd like to go somewhere with the best possible education, and as I am 33 years old I am uncertain what options I have.
I think I would like to go somewhere relatively far north, where there is mountains and good opportunities for hunting.
I think I have about two years worth of funds saved.

Any ideas? Comments?

why not X-train in the Army to be an armourer

you will be taught in the army to build- repair all sorts of arms
from service rifles to artillery

this includes lathe and mill etc- all the things used in gunsmith trade

a extra year or so on full pay in the army while doing the training would be better than paying to go to school and having to work to support yourself while at school.

as a certified armourer you could work on al class of weapons- even get your class 111 certifications etc

more oportunity to get work and get higher paid for such work

once you have got your ARm training

do some specific schooling in the USA to cover you wanted topics but you will already have the basics and just have to do the knowledge courses not the basics as well

Sal,there is an excelent gunsmithing school in Trinidad colorado where the hunting doesn;t get much better. It is also about 40 miles from the NRA Whittington center. which is about the best shooting facility in the country. If I were 20 years younger I'd go there my self. good luck with your endevers. treeman

Sal,

There is Yavapai College here in Prescott, AZ. It is in the Mountains and plenty of hunting- not sure how it compares with the Colorado school though. I know the gunsmith program here is well respected.

Here is a link

Thanks for all advice and links guys. I am looking in to it, and doing inquiries.
- It is kind of difficult for me to cross-train this "late" in my carreer, once time is up, it is up. No freebees here.
Anyways, I'd rather live a couple of years in the US :-)
