God I hate these threads, but....

My 6.5-284 project went south due to a bad BBL. The good news is the Krieger is sending me another 6.5 tube...17#HV 1-8 twist 4 groove for my BAT.

My dilemma is that I MAY ( as in slight chance) start up in 1000 BR next year again, so the main purpose in the future for this tube may not entirely be ELR steel any more....it MAY also be a tube for 1000 br.

So.....6.5x284...(I have the dies and brass).....

or....

6.5-47L...(need dies and brass).

Both of these chamberings are new to me. The 6.5-284 has won a PILE of wood over the years in 1K br. And, even though there are newer, more popular chamberings for 1K now, it SHOULD shoot as good as ever. The 6.5 - 47 L is coming on strong, but as far as I can see, not in 1K BR as of yet. And, with the Dasher, and the BR-AI , may never catch on.

Another option....keep the 6.5 for steel shooting and just chamber up another Dasher...or even a BR- AI for 600/1000 BR.

Again, I hate this type of thread, so go ahead and bash away....I DESERVE IT!!!

Nothing wrong with the 6.5 x 284. A "barrel burner". You already know that every shot fires through every barrel is on shot closer to the end of its useful life. There's Lapua brass available for any of the chamberings you've mentioned, so that's not too big of an issue. The 47mm Lapua case has the same approximate capacity as the .308, the .284 has more. Accuracy is about the same and is dependent on more than which case you choose. Think about Melonite/Black Nitride if barrel life is such a concern.

What about using it for BR, then when time to retire it in that capacity, set it back and recut the chamber for steel?

Yep..I have a 6-6.5x47 L already...LOVE IT!!!

If I was dedicated to a 6.5 I would definitely do a 6.5x47 it is a very good case I have always said you have to shoot the conditions or you are first loser if your equipment is top notch my 1 cents worth all I can afford lol.PS Todd here is my choice in the spring to tune in a heavy gun I will shoot a 6mmbr blitzen in light an a 6.5x47 Bra in the heavy gun.

I had done 6.5-284 before and felt barrel life was too short so I went 6.5-47L.
It has gotten me into shoot-offs every time I shot it in 1,000 yard matches so far and gave me a couple decent finishes in 600 yard matches as well. I have found it very easy to tune and very versatile as far as available powder use goes.

I have a couple of each. All four rifles are very accurate from 100 to 1000 but there is no question the 6.5x284 beats the 47L in the wind. I love both rounds and enjoy them both but the 6.5x284 is a class above IMO. Only reason I built the 47Ls was so so could practice more.

Not necessary in most actions.
Very interesting. I was wanting to try that caliber on one of my 700's and I just could not get the brass in easily. Now I wonder if the brass was a little big or the bolt was a little snug? I do not have either any more so I can not measure.

You might consider the 6.5x55AI. I have found good velocity and accuracy using H4831 and 4831SC.

well...the 6.5-284 has won COUNTLESS times in 1K BR, and the 6.5-47L just might win a bunch more. The 6.5x55(AI)...not so much. I don't want to try and re-invent the wheel. The 6.5-284 is a proven winner, and the 6.5-47L may be even more accurate....just a tad bit slower.

Like I said, I have the 6.5-284 dies and once fired Lapua brass already. If I thought I could get a reasonable return on the once fired brass I would sell in a heartbeat and go with the 47L.

Thanks anyway, though.

While the 6.5x284 did make marks in LR-BR, it has hardly been used for several years now and almost has went extinct. The primary reasons why being: 1/ lucky to get one season from a barrel, 2/ constant tuning needed to stay on top of the rapid throat advancement makes agg'ing with it difficult.

The 6.5x47 has set current records, and is a winning caliber, proving itself well. I consider it to be right with the 6BRFamily and 300-WSM to raw accuracy and LR-BR capability.

Or so is how I've seen them play out....
Happy New Year

I agree 100%....I just don't want to toss my brass. I could save it and build a straight 284...which is what it was SUPPOSED to be in the first place. I ordered wrong!!:oops:
