Go-No Go

i'm wondering what measurement differential is between the two gauges are .. or is there a special diff"" for each caliber ? Go-No go

Thanks
RichG,...

HS go-no-go varies between SAAMI spec and those cartridges that SAAMI hasn't as yet established parameters. HS gauges vary in length from Mfg. to Mfg. by as much as .002" to .003" in length in my experience. If you want to set HS "tight" with a gauge then Doc's Scotch tape applied to base of go-gauge is a workable solution. MY Scotch tape measures .0016" to .0018" and won't allow bolt to close. Any compression of the tape on bolt closing is minimal. I've never used tape and had a bolt that would close completely when HS was set properly to go-gauge. Can't say it didn't require a couple of tries on occasion. On .308 for example, HS can vary as much as .007" and still be in SAAMI spec. If using go-no-go gauges DON'T buy them from different MFGs. Did this answer your ques?

A "Go" gauge is cut to SAAMI minimum headspace (or the general trade accepted minimum headspace for wildcats). A "Field" gauge is right at, or 1 thou short of SAAMI Max.

A "No go" is several thou longer than a "Go".. roughly at the midpoint between a "Go" and a "Field" If you use a "Field" gauge, the bolt should not close, OR only close with a crush (resistance)... without a crush resistance, the headspace can be anything, and the barrel should be pulled and cut back until the headspace it within limits.

seem as though there is difference of opion ..?
but thank you All
.. / i'm going to be using a 6 Br new barrel"Rich,
Which cartridge are you refering to?
JS

some one told me before i posted here that there was a .008 difference between NO- & GO
i kinda thought that was ALOT.. an thought i'd ask ... thinking possible of making my own from a brand new case... ? but .008 Hmmm

buying go & no from the same company makes good sence...

There is ten thou (0.010") between SAAMI Minimum and Maximum. So there is 9 or 10 thou between GO and Field. It makes no sense that a no go would be 1 or 2 thou shorter than a field.

Go and no-go gauges are typically used in mass production of rifles, where a guy on a production line tries both and if one closes and one doesn't, then the gun gets shipped.

But custom gun builders mostly use actual calibrated gauges to set headspace.

Making one out of a brass case is silly - it will not hold a measurement - it will get squished the first time you use it. Headspace gauges are not expensive, just buy one (or a few).

I have never heard of a field gage for anything other than a military cartridge, but to answer the question for a 6 br, .003" between go and no-go.

All custom smiths use go gages. I have some no-go gages for some cartridges and check them for peace of mind in the event that we don't always live in a perfect world. For all intensive purposes, all you really need is the go.

I normally only use a go gauge chambering my own barrels. I have a few no gos to check other rifles. I'm not to concerned about my own rifles. I have made wildcats that I have moved the shoulders forward .100". I don't shoot ammo or brass on a custom chamber that I haven't formed.

ok i tried plastic tape on the brass good idea tape... thanks

what i did to measure was to fold in half the tape having two brands one was .005 folded the other was .003 ...

what i had in mind originally was to solider some lead on an face off to a certain measurement.. was just a thought at the time... hmm woulda been messy i guess

i'l take that .003 is good for 6 Br...

thanks All

Howdy All
fwiw... i saw a U-tube video this morn. on 'how-to' .. barrel swap... guy used a pair of go-no go
had numbers on both .. there was a .004 diff
