GM TEC for carbon

There is always a lot of talk about gm tec in removing carbon and maybe im just looking in wrong places, but i cant find this stuff in anywhere online? I also checked local hardware store only had seafoam, which definately doesnt seem right ha. Any recommendations on maybe if they changed the name of it or where to locate something similar

I think they discontinued it. I use carb out , at least that is what I remember , it is made by wipeout.

Haven't seen it in a few years. Actually Seafoam or Chevron Techron is what I use for an initial clean out. In the end I use Bore Tech Carbon Remover C4. It is excellent but on the expensive side so I use either of the above mentioned ones just to remove the heaviest (carbon) first and then the Bore Tech.
I found that most of the superb automotive cleaners are either gone or changed to something you could probably safely drink!

Seafoam might be the WORST name for a decent product.

Go to a boat place and get some mercury quickleen or the yamaha stuff. It slipped thru the democrat's paws as they were concentrating on GM's version

I bought a lot of GM TEC as they were discontinuing it. It is great on carbon. I mix up my own barrel cleaner. 8 OZ of white ammonia, I can of Kroil and finish a gallon mix with GM TEC. A great cleaning solvent.

do you really think there is much gained from using the seafoam, chevron, quickleen or some type of automotive based product...or do you think that the normal MPro7, TM solution, Carb Out, C4 just to name a few of the popular carbon removal would do just as good a job or maybe even better? setting price aside for a moment

I wish that 6mmbr would do another scientific testing like they did for rust preventative. 12 guys you can ask them what they use for carbon remover and you will get 12 different answers. I like the scientific approach as I just can't find that one carbon remover that I stick with for more than a couple months.

If you disregard the price the answer is no. None of them do as good a job as say C4. I guess I look at it like washing the floor without first sweeping.

I think this thread is like a lot of them. Whatever you personalty use is the best. It may not be, but if it works for you, do it. I can make a gallon of bore cleaner for under $50 as I bought the GM TEC at a greatly reduced price when it was discontinued.
A good borescope will tell how good both your cleaner and cleaning methods are.

A little cautionary note: After reading about some of these products in this thread, I did a little looking around and found the MSDS for the Mercury product, and I suggest that all of you do the same for any of these products that were made to put in engines to remove carbon. There is some really nasty stuff in there, that should not be treated as casually as I see almost everyone handling bore cleaners. I know that most will ignore this, but just in case there is someone out there that can actually manage the effort, I think that once you have done the reading, that you may reconsider using many of these products to clean barrels.
