glue in action---barrel block

I know its a long shot but....anyone tried a 6.5-284 in a
glue in ....no recoil lug

how long or heavy of a barrel do you need before using a barrel block

The answer to both your questions is, it depends on the action. For example, a Stolle action does not need a recoil lug because the rear of the action acts as one, whereas a Rem 700 has nothing except the glue to prevent the action from sliding to the rear. The tenon length and general action rigidity will determine exactly how heavy a barrel you can hang on the end without some support such as a block or bedding.

thanks Ray....I knew someone would come to my rescue....

one is a nesika j its on a point blank bench gun glue in with no recoil lug sooo...too much recoil for me to try a 6.5-284 ?

I have just been confused how long a tube I can put on the nesika without a block and being a glue in only...as you know thats the beauty of a custom action is the switch barrel program...I would like to thank you for the info I have read many of your other posts and appreciate the input...

I also have a Dan doling trued 700 that does have a pinned lug and it has a lv taper 26" barrel so I wanted to maybe make it into a 6.5-284 but wanted a longer tube with no barrel block I know I'll have to remove the bolt to extract a live round being on a short action

From your description I assume you have a rifle built on the Nesika J which is already glued in and you want to change barrels. I don't own a Nesika but as I recall they do have the squared-off tang that more-or-less acts as a recoil lug. If you have a good glue-in job I would think it would be more than adequate for the 6.5/284. The quality of the glue job is all important. As far as a barrel block, most shooters I know do not consider them necessary unless you are using a very long, over 30 inches) straight barrel. If you use a HV taper, or even a Max HV up to 30" the Nesika action should handle it. Why don't you give Bill Shehane a call. He knows more about barrel blocks than most anyone else and will give you good advice and he's always more than happy to help. Others reading this may have different opinions. JMHO
