Giving my KRG a face lift!

"I'm no master, just consistently lucky!!"

Granted that there is a certain amount of "luck" involved in most constructive activity but the operators skill is what ultimately determines the outcome.

Never underestimate the value of the skills you have cultivated, enhanced and perfected from the very first project you undertook.

I ordered some of the ink's and a set of makeup brushes on Amazon tonight. I watched several video's on youtube, and it seems that most are using makeup brushes for most of the detail work.
I've got several takeoff stocks to practice on. I've done several airbrush paint jobs on AR's, so maybe I have enough skill and patience for this.

Hey guys just wanted to let you guys that are trying or going to attempt to do this on your own. I am going to give kinda a guide list for ya:
1. spray paint the stock a FLAT white. I use Rust-Oleum 2x ultra cover Be sure to let it completely dry.

BE SURE TO HOLD YOUR STOCK VERTICAL WHEN YOU ARE DOING THIS! it will keep the alcohol inks from running down the sides.

2. Use a yellow alcohol ink for random highlighting. I use long solid strokes they can be wavy for just a light highlight. This will be helpful when you are applying your darker colors. I personally work off of the yellow lines following the pattern that I made with the yellow. I done like 4-5 yellow lines down each side with a couple on the bottom. Be sure the yellow is dry that way you can go over it to use as a highlighter. if it is wet when you go over it it will move.
3. Be sure to have a little cup of alcohol there by you so you can clean your brush after using the yellow. Dab off really good on a paper towel.
4. When applying your darker colors you don't have to clean your brush in between colors as much but still clean it every once in a while in the alcohol dabbing it after you clean it.

Alcohol inks will move when applying a different color. They are alcohol based. Alcohol inks don't take long to dry like maybe 5 minutes at the most.

Please refer to youtube they have great tutorials on wood grain look tumblers. Same concept applies.

BE SURE to seal after you are done. I am using a polycrylic protective finish in the clear satin. I currently have 3 coats on my stock.

Be sure to post photos of your work. I would love to see it!

Sorry about the rambling. These are just some tips that I have found that helped me.

Thanks for the pointer's. I think I watched almost every video on Youtube on how to do this, it looks straight forward to do.
I've painted several AR's and stocks using an air brush with stencils and automotive paints in the past.
I painted this one for a friend, his favorite color is Ford Leadfoot Gray, with a Copperhead snake skin pattern.

This is my 6.8 SPC II build that I also painted with an air brush.

I looks like spalted maple or spalted walnut.

Last year I repainted an older McMillan stock. After seeing that paint job, I now wish I would had waited and tried what you did. I’ll say it again that it really looks like spalted wood.

I'm a third-generation timber man.My Grandfather hewed ties with an axe. I guess You could say I was born with a love for nice figured wood grain. This one came out better than I envisioned. But these inks are like a box of chocolates. You never know what your going to get, to a point exactly.Kind of like a snowflake no two are alike. Spalted walnut is one of my favorites.
