Gill vs. radial brake accuracy

I was looking at installing a brake, (done by a 40yr Smith) On my 300 win mag tikka varmint. I mentioned I bought a tikka varmint in 6.5cm with a Gill brake that was installed by a reputable Smith from the previous owner. I love the brake on my creedmoor....FYI. he said if your looking for precision and shot to shot consistency he recommends a radial brake. He said if your looking for a "hood ornament" then he can install a Gill brake. He said the radial brakes are about 75% consistent and Gill brakes about 15% anyone ever hear this before?? "Radial brakes won't reduce as much recoil but their better for precision." - smith

No, never heard that…but shoot a radial brake prone and you’ll cuss that dude for days. Off a bench or out a blind window and they are fine.

They both have their place.

Sounds like a gunsmith that’s time to retire, go somewhere else.

Made properly, installed properly, both work well. They each do the same thing. Vent gas to the outside. I make my radial brakes with the holes facing forward 5 degrees. I even made radial brakes leaving two rows of holes off the bottom of the brake. No issues with accuracy.

FWIW, I installed a Witt Machine brake on my 300win and had an increase in accuracy. I suspect it's due to the reduced recoil not causing the magnum flinch and not because of the brakes design.

I call bs with one condition
I’ve heard if you have ports on one side, you need to have the same on the other side . I think this applies mostly to brakes that have ports on top but not on bottom. Maybe it only affects thinner barrels idk but it makes sense to me if you think about barrel movement when firing. I use “ gill brakes” from muzzlebrakesandmore which have them on the sides angled back and up. They tame my 35 whelen down significantly

I’ll never use a brake that diverts gas down Kicks up dust clouds, damages shooting benches
Also idk if a radial brake does anything a plain muzzle doesn’t do if it doesn’t direct gas back and up.

Ask what is changing shot to shot that is having an effect on consistency.

Sounds like he is trying to find an excuse to save some time and effort by not having to time a brake. I put a lot of brakes on and I have never seen one hurt accuracy.
