ghog season has begun!

Ever noticed how much weight a ghog loses from the time you have him in your scope,(16#!!!), 281 yds,, whack him, and watch him roll over, THEN, you go to him and he now weighs 10, 3oz. Well, it happened to me today, again. It wasn't that hot, so he couldn't dehydrate that much and the exit wound was a chest shot...not much heavy stuff there. These critters continue to amaze me.

Lol. One has to love "ground shrinkage".

the rain finally stopped, so i went afield. i have been watching a large hole for two seasons noting a well worn path out into a nice hay field...nothing. today was different. he was in the field grazing and i dare not get too close. he saw me anyway, so i stopped and pulled out "ole faithful", the 22 BR shooting the 55 bergers at 3700 fps. 300+ yds and slight 9 o'clock wind and he was walking toward his hole. clicked up the elevation needed. i kept the target dot on his chest and he stopped!!! BANG...SPLATT! a little flipping/flopping so another round chambered. he was slowing down, so i held off, then he flipped over and stopped. the second largest ghog of the year...13+ #. found some shade and popped 2 more...8# and a 10#. going home i stopped at a field not known for large pigs. one grazing at 300+ yds and wind at 12 o'clock. let's try the 6 mm BR pushing those 58 vmaxes at 3600 fps...DRT, not even a tail salute! this one was a paltry 12+ #. another great day.

Got several the last week or so and man are they FAT! All of them met their maker in alfalfa fields while they were chowing down. Tagged this one last evening, #7 in a five acre field. I wear 10&1/2 shoes. :D

Have not replied for a while here. Worked 31 out of 32 days so when I had Sunday off,I headed for the fields.

Figured I would try one that has always produced so it was no surprise that I spotted one within two minutes from leaving the truck. Smacked it. One down and not even to the field yet.

Hunted for about six hrs. and bagged eleven of them.Should have been twelve but missed one about 200 yds. out.Right over it's head.

My shooting buddy had off on Monday and called me to see if I wanted to go bust some hogs and since I didn't have to go to work until midnight,I said sure!!

Went to another farm and no more than got there we spotted one in a field taking in some sun.Ranged it at 394 yds. Asked John if he wanted to take a crack at it but he said no,you try it. Got set up and sent the 50gr. pill it's way.Saw the bullet impact right behind the hogs head but it didn't move.I asked John if I got it and then I see the hog slowly roll over on it's back.DRT.

We got four more but could not get pics due to a creek between us and them. John got them ranging from 100yds.- 350yds.

Went to another farm where the alfalfa had just been cut.Didn't even get out of the truck when we spotted three out feeding. As we were getting geared up,a farm hand came up to talk to us.He asked what we were hunting and told him ghogs.Showed him two of them out in the field and he asked if we could shoot them out that far. Grabbed the 22BR and proceeded to dispatch both of them within 30 seconds. Shots were about 225yds. and 300yds. Not hard shots by any stretch but he seemed impressed.

After a few minutes we were heading to the knoll where we wanted to shoot from. We were almost to the top when I spotted two in front of a overgrown rock break. They ran for cover so John got set up to try and ambush them.I proceeded to the top of the knoll and got set up.I immediately spotted two out side of a hole feeding.Ranged them right at 300yds. The 22BR is zeroed at 300 so no need to try and figure where to put the crosshair. Squeezed one off and heard the smack. The other one would not come out so could not get a shot on it.

We ended up with six more with John getting the long shots of the day. Got two at 394yds. and 402yds. with his 22-250.

Went out again yesterday solo and bagged another five.Left my camera in the truck so I couldn't take any pics.

Not bad,27 hogs in about 2 1/2 days of hunting.Hopefully we still have another couple weeks of shooting.

I hate NY. I have not seen a chuck in two weeks. It is fifty degrees here when it is hot, and the grass is basically dead. The hogs, if they come out, spend about 5 minutes then back under. Season is over here.

IMMORTAL, That' is some darn good action and shooting. The best day I ever had was eight and that was a lot of driving around on "hogpatrol". ;D

they are out getting fatten up for the winter nap, so i visited an old hole to see if anybody moved in after i removed it's last inhabitant. not to be rude or offensive, but nature calls when one is out for hours, so i took the break to relieve my bladder. wouldn't you know it, one pokes his head out as if to watch me!!! nature will have to wait, so i zipped up and brought out a real weapon, my 6x47 R with a 62 euwin and put the dot on his ear...needed more target, so i waited and he obliged. these critters are curious, so he came out to check me out and he promptly checked out with a resounding BANG..WHAPPPP! a big well fed male, second largest of the year. he fell backwards lodging himself in his hole. not getting the numbers as some of you guys, but getting some big ones.
