ghog season has begun!

I've got to learn how to post pics. Hunted a never before hunted property on sat. Pulled onto the road 15 ft and there was one standing not 100 yds away and he apparently didn't know the script. He must have thought we were in a staring contest.. The 20 TAC declared the winner. No bullet hole or blood. Found one later sunning herself...the end!

Was supposed to work yesterday but with the forecast being sunny and little wind...well I burned a vacation day.

Got to the first farm about 1 pm and started glassing. Didn't see a thing for over 20 min. when I spotted one behind me peeking out from a culvert pipe. Guesstimated the range at about 150 yds. and proceeded to dispatch it.

This one is for Snert. ;D

No more action there so I decided to hit another farm. No more then got geared up when I spotted one just over a small crest feeding outside it's hole. Ranged it at 329 yds. Got set up and smoked it.

Started to walk towards the crest I wanted to shoot from when I spotted one off in the distance sitting up out of the hole. Ranged it at 515 yds. Sent a 50gr. pill it's way and saw the ghog drop and dust fly behind it. Felt good about the shot but could not confirm the kill since I did not see the hog anymore.Figured I would walk out there after the hunt.

Got to the crest and spotted one at 226 yds. Needless to say it was a done deal. ;). Soon after I spotted one feeding beside some train tracks.Distance was 280 yds. Smacked him too.

Glassed for a while and did not see anything so I figured I would take a walk to confirm the 515 yd. shot. Got to the spot where it disappeared and sure enough there in the hole was a dead piggy! ;D Long shot of the year.

As I was heading back,I spotted another one in a draw peeking out at me. This was only about 75 yds. but it was in a place where I could not get a longer shot due to the terrain. Went ahead and popped it.

Didn't have my camera with me while hunting so I had to get the gang together for a group photo.Let me tell you carrying all my gear and ghogs was getting to be a lot like work!!

Not a bad day. 6 kills.

My friend shot this one in the eye at 209 yds..Not sure what rifle he used.. probably 6 BR or 22BR....

Immortal,

I am honored! THAT is the way to dispatch a pasture grizzly!

Still real sluggish here...grass just starting to turn light green in spots and my groundhog fields on northern exposures have patches of snow, still. Few more weeks....

Immortal,
Congrats on the #s we use to have a rich environment of Ground Grizzlies . I've been laying low last couple of years in hope the #s start to improve .

Nice way to kick off the season, gentlemen!

Snert, will be gettin' up there next weekend, thanks for the pasture report!
Headed to OK tomorrow to call in a Rio, and maybe whack some hogs at beyond reasonable distances. Wild hogs, not g-hogs... ;)

Enjoying the pics! Thanks & keep up the good fight!!!

Went out again yesterday after my wife and I had lunch. On the way to the area I planned on hunting,I decided to give one of the farmers a call. He said he has been seeing the little diggers all over and declared war on them.Told him I was heading his way.

Got to the field about 1:30 and walked to a small knoll that provided a good vantage point.Started glassing and within 15 min. I spotted one standing up out of it's hole.Range was 271 yds.

Smack!!

Glassed for a few minutes more and spotted one way down by some railroad tracks making it's way to the right. It finally stopped and was able to ping it with the Leica. 417 yds. Got set up and dispatched it. Sorry,no photo of this one. Took one with my phone but not the camera. :o

After a bit more glassing,I spotted one coming out of it's hole in a rock break.Range was 220 yds. Hit it with the Vmax and watched it get lifted into the air and right back down the hole. Glassed for a bit more when I spotted a ghog head peeking out of the same hole in the rock break where I just smacked one. Well,I already knew the range so got on it and WHACK!!

This pic shows both of them in the hole.

After that I missed two in a row. Chip shots or at least should have been. :'(

Started glassing again and decided to take a look behind me when I spotted one on a dirt mound.Ranged it at 347 yds. and smoked it. Hog was on top of the large dirt pile on left.

Another for snert!!

After that I decided to hit another part of the field. As I was walking,I spotted one feeding in front of a rock break.Tried to get to the top of a small rise when it spotted me and took off for a small pile of rocks. It stopped on the rocks to take a look back and that was all the time I needed. Guestimated the range about 225 yds.

As I was walking towards the one I just shot,I spotted one standing up just outside it's hole. Range was only about 100 yds.

Spotted one more but by the time I could get to a spot to shoot from,it had disappeared. Not a bad day. 7 more in the bag.Brings my season total to 20 for the year.

Good hunting guys.

Here is the "King Groundhog" blaster! Have to confirm but I think he's shot 14,000 lifetime hogs all with handguns!

Here's one for Snert! 239 yards with my 14tw .243AI and a Sierra 70 gr. BlitzKing at 3857 fps MV. Shot was made standing using a Bog Pod tripod. Sure do wish I could say I was aiming there but from the standing position w/o a backrest I am just happy to have hit it! In one eye and out the other. ;D I've got 11 so far this season.

$#@! that does it! I am going out even if there is no green grass! Since Mr Majestic and Immortal are ganging up and dedicating those fine shots to me, it is time to return the favor! GREAT shooting guys!

Not done with you yet snert....went out today with my buddy John and we bagged 8 more. Will post a field report (and pics) tomorrow.

Ok, Ok...UNCLE!!! ;D

I did get out to shoot today. Took my 13 year old daughter and let her get used to the 722/40X 222 off the table and rest. She takes her hunter safety course next week and can't wait to shoot a groundhog. She did alright, all groups were horizontal as the wind beat her up a bit, but otherwise settled right in for 3 five shot groups. Only issue is she shoots from the wrong side! Must be a genetic abnormality!

Had 1/2 hour to try to see a chuck, but none showed up in fields I can shoot, so brought her home and now I am cleaning rifles. and waiting to get a few g-hogs so Immortal and Mr M don't get to uppity! :D

HEY! Watch it with the talk of shooting from the wrong side. I do also!! lol ;D

Met my buddy yesterday at the same field where I got the seven the day before. We parked on the far side of the field since it was close to where I wanted to hunt. This part of the field has plenty of rock/tree breaks and dirt piles that are crawling with the little diggers.

We glassed for a bit and spotted one outside it's hole looking at us.Told John to take it and he did.Distance was about 120 yds.

Glassed for a bit longer when I spotted one a fair distance out.Pinged it with the Leica at 466 yds. My first shot was just over it's head.Second shot rolled it but it crawled down the hole.Hate when that happens!

Got back to glassing and spotted one a short time later in the bottom of the field feeding.Asked John if he wanted it and he said "sure". Range was 175 yds. and he proceeded to dispatch it.

After that I spotted one outside of a hole where John got his first one. Range was about 160 yds. and I had to belly crawl to the top of a crest to get a shot. Done deal.

Not long after I spotted one on a dirt mound peeking at us from around the side of it.Disappeared for a few minutes but came out at the bottom of the pile to feed. Distance was about 200 yds. and I told John it was all his. I called his first shot high 1" and John quickly adjusted and put it to rest.

Got quiet for a while when I spotted one standing outside it's hole by a power pole that was in a fence row. By the time I got set up on it, it had moved to the other side of the fence in some tall grass.Waited for a few minutes when John said it was peeking out of the hole where we originally saw it. All I could see was about 3" of it's head and that was all I needed.

Went to retrieve the ghog and no more than got back to where we were sitting when I spotted another one in the fence row about 30 yds. to the right where I just shot this one. By the time I got set up it had made it's way to the same den area where we had already taken two. It was just about to go down the hole when I found it in the scope.

Helped it down the hole.

We spotted one more sitting just outside a hole where a big tree was uprooted. Distance was 246 yds.Told John to do the honors and he did.Perfect head shot.

The day was about done and on the way back to the trucks we spotted one in a small bottom feeding. It spotted us and took off for it's hole.It stopped in some tall grass and John (who was already setting up on it while it was running) smacked it.Shot was only about 100 yds. but still was fun to watch.

All in all a great day.8 kills.3 for me and 5 for John. That brought us to 15 kills in 2 days in the same field.

Oh and snert.........there's more!!

Went out again today and decided to hit a farm that I have not shot on this year. The grass was a little tall so I decided to take a walk to see how bad it was before I drug all my gear out.

Didn't see anything til I started walking back to the truck.Spotted one on a rock break looking at me.Spooked,it went underground so I decided to get my gear and set out to ambush it.Took a good 20 min. for it to re appear and when it did....smack!!

First one of the season with the AR.

After that I decided to take a ride to the far side of the farm.As I was rounding a turn in the dirt road,I spotted 2 ghogs chasing each other about 200 yds. away.I slammed the truck in park, grabbed my gear and went after them. They were moving to my right and the grass was too tall to shoot prone so I had to put the legs of my bipod on the seat of my shooting chair. Found one of the hogs in my scope and dispatched it.Have no idea where the other one went.

From there I decided to hit another farm.Only saw one.It was about 280 yds. out feeding beside a huge tree.Got on it and smoked it.Did not get a pic.I would have had to jump 2 fences and cross a creek.Too much much work for a hero pic.

Left that farm and headed to another.Didn't even get to where I wanted to park when I spotted one standing 1/2 way out it's hole looking at me.Decided to go ahead and park there.Got my gear, got on it and DRT. Distance was about 180 yds.

Decided to take the 22BR this time.

After that I missed one that had just the top part of it's head sticking out of a hole under a log.

Walked to a small knoll when I spotted another one standing part way out of a hole looking away from me.Again I had to put my bipod on my seat due to the tall grass.

Distance was about 125 yds.

Clouds started rolling in so I called it a day. 5 kills for the day and brings my season total to 28 so far.

Taking the young'ins out trumps all! ;)

That's the truth!! I have a 10yr. old daughter who loves to go ghog hunting with me.I just picked up a new custom Remmy 700 chambered in 20 TAC I think I'm going to give it to her as a present if she continues to show interest.

Immortal,Majestic, where the heck are you? I see GREEN grass. It is brown here, still.

I am going to come to you, then when it warms up here, you can come here, if you want to buy a NY hunting license...expensive to shoot a chuck in y opinion

And I don't know if I can take much more of the vicarious fun.....

SC PA is greening up nicely. Cut the grass for the first time this year on Saturday. The farms I hit this early either insist that I annihilate them or are too thick to see them when the vegetation comes in. Funny thing is out of the eleven I got so far all but one have been Boars which won't affect my target numbers later. I've read that each chuck costs the farmer 2 tons of hay annually. This is because they eat it off when it's young. I've seen the devastation done to bean fields and the only goood thing, for the hunter, is it makes it very easy to spot where to watch! A plus to hunting early is that they are dumber than a box of rocks right now! That won't last long and they will be ducking for cover at the slightest sign of movement soon enough! Happy hunting gentlemen!
