ghog season has begun!

I went out to check out a potential hunting site today...nah. I decide to visit old hunting fields nearby and it didn't take long. 217 yds one was feeding. I tried a new load in my 6 BR.

This gun whacked a bunch last year. 66 cheeks pushed by a stout load of the original T32 powder. This combo shoots a 3 shot group in the ones and occ in the zeros. Poi was exactly where the tiny dot of my night force 8x32 np2dd said it should. The pig didn't move! Visited another farm and found several new holes and a feeding ghog...BANG..SPLAT!! Same scenario...DRT! A great start to what should be a good year.

I'm seeing more and more of them out when I'm driving home from work in the late afternoon.

Really looking forward to sending some 87's their way.

Alan

Got my first, of the year, last week. Shot two yesterday on my lunch break. 17HMR is 3 for 3 so far. Groundhog hunting is worse than crack!

Finally saw my first live one yesterday! I've been seeing dead ones along the road for a couple of weeks. I'm trying to hold off until the beginning of May but if the weather gets a couple of days in the 70's it's going to be tough!

My son grabbed his trusty 17HMR Savage 2 evening's ago after seeing one in the field walking up driveway from school. I had been wanting to dig the rifle out from back of safe for a week or so after seeing them locally. He promptly went out in the neighbors field and got his first of the year.

Still a lot of snow here and there in fields and along the edges, but hopefully next week we may go hit a few farms locally in early evening. Spring is still trying to break thru here in NW Pa.

I don't like shooting too many this early but one of my patrons raises horses and had to put one down after it broke a leg in a ghog hole. She wants them ALL "harvested"...male, female(pregnant or nursing) ,newborns..." kill them all"! She has bushogged areas so I can see their holes...found 6 new ones yesterday. I'm looking forward to trying out my newest lead laser...a 20 tactical shooting 35 gr bergers at 3900 fps using a rarely seen powder, Tubal 3000.

I know what you mean. I have several that will call me when they see their first one. Like yours they want them annihilated! Just following orders. ;D

Wish we had them down here in Ar.Sounds like fun.If we are lucky,we will see maybe one per year. Guess I will stay with crows and hogs.

Alright!! With all this talk of chuck hunting I just couldn't take it anymore. So I grabbed my gear today and headed for the fields.Saw a few while driving so I figured it should be a fairly productive day even with the wind.

Got to the first farm and spotted one diving for it's hole. Waited but it never came back up.He's a smart one. 8) As I was leaving,I spotted another eating some grass.Had to put a stalk on it. Got to about 120 yds. and laid it to rest.

After that,I left to go to another farm. Pulled up on a high crest and started glassing.Didn't see anything for about ten minutes when I spotted one feeding a few yds. away from and old overgrown barn/tree pile. Ranged it at 265 yds. and proceeded to dispatch it.

Makes number 3 for the season.Going out again tomorrow and hopefully increase my body count.

Immortal

Love that 40X...no better icon groundhog blaster than that!

Walnut and stainless...ohh, I love it. But one question? 265 yards and you did not head shoot that puppy? Must have been a long winter!

Very nice!

I have a similar rig almost finished. 22br, 12 twist, harrells rings/bases, Weaver 36x, Kelbly trigger, pinned PTG lug, pillar bedded, BAT trigger guard and screws. Hope to get out hog hunting with it at some point...

Took one yesterday with a 20 tactical. It's first, 35 berger at 3900 fps and it froze after being hit. Not a drop of blood and I could not find a bullet hole. Two more bit the dust, one from a 6BR, 66 cheeks and the other one ate a 60 gr berger from a 14 tw 22 BR. MV here is 3550 and again, no blood and no exit...total dumping of the bullet's energy in it's chest. A really good year so far and I have 2 new, never hunted farms to visit later this week.

Some nice rigs guys. Went out yesterday and the wind was about as bad as the day before. Anyways,my shooting buddy went with me.
Got to the field we wanted to hunt and proceeded to walk towards a crest we wanted to sit on. About 3/4 the way there we spotted one moving from a rock break to a brush pile. Tried to get set up on him but luck was not on our side. We got to the crest and started to glass. After about 5 min. I spotted one peeking it's head out of a hole. Told my buddy John to take it. Range was 111 yds. Watched the dust get blown off it's head through the binos. First kill of the year for him.

Went to another spot and after a bit of glassing,I spotted one feeding just off of a small tree break. Got set up and it disappeared into the trees.

Went to another farm and after glassing for a while, spotted one feeding just outside it's hole. Ranged it at 352 yds. and smacked it with the 22BR. Heard the smack and watched it slowly roll down it's hole.Could not get a hero pic,I was late leaving to get home for the Easter dinner.
