Editor Note - Part 1 was on Wednesday not Tuesday - my mistake - see what hog fever does to you.
Or...wrote this after dinner - had a stiff Maker's Mark before dinner tonight.
Thursday - another perfect day. Head to a farm I expect lots of action BUT - they are slugging the field with cow s***.
This is the worst smell and site you can ever imagine. My poor ghog friends - I feel for you.
Move to next farm, this is a neat place. Small farm, about 100 acres. The field rolls down from on top of a hill where the farmer's house and barn are located. The farmer allows me to set up about 20 yards from his drive way facing the field which contains a beautiful tree / brush line that runs about 1000 yards or so. I can see most of it from my position. However the field is laced with two rows of soybeans, about a foot high but it doesn't obscure the tree / brush line.
This 223 Rem Model 700 Heavy Varmint territory - long shooting - at least for me. As soon as I set up I see one at 232 yards, a crawler. Sent a 50 Nosler - see the 'tail death wiggle' - hog down.
Another great start. I'm on a roll from yesterday.
Field goes cold but I'm so comfortable I don't feel like moving - just enjoying the magnificent view and weather. Eat my dinner - trail mix and water. Farmer walks over and we chat for a while. It's about 7:00 now. See another one about the same location as the other one I shot. But he's on the move - must have been in the soybeans and I couldn't see him. He heads for tree line and disappears - never reappears - full stomach no doubt.
A few minutes later see one straight away, 231 yards, another crawler. Send another Nosler - hog rolls over - hog down.
Wow. Feeling invincible
. Later inspect down hogs - both pups.
About 8:00 now - one rolls out of the tree line to my far left - 308 yards. Too far for me off sticks. Work my way through apple trees on top of the hill concealing my movement until I'm within 241 yards. Can't get any closer without spooking him. Large hog - make able shot with this rifle even off sticks. Set up - crawler - profile slightly obscured - sent a Nosler - hog freezes - I missed
Must have gone high since he doesn't spook to hole. Take another shot - missed again
- this one got his attention - he runs to hole. I'm not dangerous -
Back to reality - I'm not Daniel Boone just an old fart with diminishing skills.
However on balance, two good days of hogging, 8 of 9. There might have been a Part 3 but wifey had other ideas.
The problem is that the only cure for Hog Fever is going hogging but a nice tall glass of Maker's Mark before dinner helps - a little.
