GFL Brass -

During the Obama administration I could not find 260 brass and had trouble finding any 243 to neck up and finally bought 200 PPUs the flash holes are over the place but they shoot good so I am just going to ignore the flash holes and shoot the stuff till it is trash.

Found some once fired .223 brass and worked to clean it up for some reloads.
Unfamiliar with the headstamp of "GFL" (Guilio-Fiocchi-Lecco) but I didn't research it right away.
After cleaning it all up and reaming the primer pockets I noticed that the flash holes in some of the brass were off center; like waaaaay off center. Obviously I won't be using this stuff. Here's a comparison between Winchester, Lapua, and GFL for anyone interested:

Back about the time this thread was started I did the same as the OP. My findings were the same as his.

OMG this is a 2014 thread You have got me in trouble now. The old thread police are going to send Antifa to my house.
Oh lets resurrect this close to 8 year old thread. last post in 2020 though. IVE found some GSL 223 brass lately- I think its the G.S.L. stuff. It seems very consistent so far and the pockets are nice and tight. Havent shot it yet but ill keep this thread posted if i can find some primers. o_O

I’ve found it shoots as well as anything else in my service rifle. I used it to shoot a 200-10 at 600 two weeks ago. I’ve got four reloads on some of it without losing any primer pockets yet.

I saw about two days ago Everglades Ammo had new GFL in stock. I had to run a .223 mandrel through mine to make the necks round again, and then I did an inside chamfer before seating bullets.

Ive found those before also. I also picked up some brass at the range that were worse than GFL. They were stamped USA and the flash holes were almost to the edge of the pocket on some. All of them had varying amounts of being off center. They were so far off I tossed them in the scrap bucket.

I would have done the same with the far off center. I picked up some GFL, FC, and LC , Wednesday off the ground. I still haven't loaded a GFL as of yet, but I will bet it will shoot good enough for me. For plinking.

I've run this stuff for AR ammo that's not critical precision. It works fine. Aside from the sloppy concentricity on the flash hole, it's fairly robust brass that has decent primer pocket tension.

I was given some range pick up GFL brass. After cleaning and decapping,
I noticed the off center flash holes. Some of the brass had funny bulges in it too. That has more to do with the gun they were run through. But.....I tossed them because I didn't want to run them thru my sizing die, due to the bulges. I think GFL stands for Good F***ing Luck.

LOL. Yeah... for detail oriented eyes, the GFL flash holes are awful. I've never had the flash hole so far off that it interfered with decapping.

If I just get a few pieces, I recycle them. But if I get a hundred or so, I'll run them with lesser grade bullets for shooting shorter range steel.

The GFL brass must have been designed for the RDF (Random Damn Fliers) bullets.

LoL…. Fiochi ammo is actually pretty accurate for factory ammo in both of my 233s. I do save the brass, but I haven’t brought myself to reload any yet after seeing the flash holes.

I had some fliers in my 223 with GFL.I pulled the expander out of my full length sizer, trimedt and shaved, then used Wilson expander.Concentricity dropped from.006 to .002 No more fliers.

I just cut down the crappy GFL misaligned flash hole brass into .300 BLK. I don't really see any difference in accuracy as compared to other common brass. I use my BLK as a truck gun for wild hogs mostly but also the occasional deer. Shots are rarely over 150 yds mind you.

I have bought the Fiocchi 40g and 50g Vmax loads and they have shot great for PD and other fun--I read online about the offset holes--I have never seen it at all in any of the GFL brass I have loaded.
I have some with 4-5 reloads on it--the stuff has done ok for me--primer pockets still tight. When I get a flyer I toss that piece of brass and keep moving

I know this is a very old topic, but I haven't been able to find a lot of info. I thought I would share my experiences.

I have been shooting the 50 rd boxes of fiocchi .223 with 40, 50, or 55 vmax for around 15 years in several rifles. It has always shot right around 1 to 1.5 moa. Sometimes .75. I always tossed the brass, but I started reloading a few years ago. With the ammo and component shortage I reloaded what I had. I have also worked with the 204 Ruger brass.

At the start of the pandemic there was 400 rds of 204 ruger at my LGS in the 50 rd boxes. I bought it all for my WOA upper. The 32 gr shot pretty good, about .75 moa. The 40 shot like 1 to 1.25. I uniformed pockets, deburred flash holes, trim, chamfer. I did notice many had off center flash holes. The SD\ES have been horrible. I have shot soo many rounds and 70 ES was the best for 10 shots. 100-150 is the norm. I tested the factory ammo amd it also had an ES of 150. Im tossing it and buying new brass. It was good practice for me though.

I also shot the .223 40s out of a ruger MPR. They shot pretty good right around moa. For a cheap AR cheap ammo I was happy. I did the full prep on that too, and I don't recall the offset flash holes. I don't have my notes with me, but the ES was way better. I think it was in the 30s to 50s, maybe better. I did a seating depth test and 3 shots into .6 moa. Haven't finished testing yet. Since the AR beats up brass I'll keep using what I have and then switch to starline. I'm sure I will also lose it fast hunting yotes and jacks.

In summation, good for plinking.
