getting started in f-class shooting

There is no "F-Class" class. There is F-Open and F-T/R

Which one you start on depends on the equipment you already have. F-T/R could be cheaper depending on the equipment you buy.

Do you currently own an accurate rifle? If so, what is it?

I would recommend trying the 6BR first since it most likely will shoot better. Learning to read the wind is much easier with an exceptionally accuracy rifle. Using a front rest and rear bag in F-Open also helps this endeavor. The lower recoil is a plus too. It should be a bit cheaper to shoot also.

Best of luck you will love it.

Another question is "where are you located?" After all, "getting started" can be simple, for instance, if you happen to be near me, my answer is come out to the match, I'll have a rifle you can try if you aren't set up with one you think will work at say, 600yds. If you do have one, bring it and we'll get you on paper. I doubt very much if I'm unique in that view, so if you have a range nearby that's the route I'd take.

Both rifles you mention are quite capable, so it comes down to preference: you are limited to a bipod/rear bag and a lower weight limit in F-T/R. In F-Open you can have a heavier rifle, and you can shoot from a front rest/rear bag with either rifle if you wanted. Being an open shooter, I like that better, but then I don't shoot well from a bipod personally, and prefer the accuracy of the 6BR.

Lbart"s right, you will love it. I was hooked right away! And dont go watch, jump in. Remember to over-use your empty chamber flag, safety is #1.

xdshooter, do you have a range near you? I see you are in Niagara. Beautiful area, my brother and his wife will be going there this weekend. Back to shooting, 6BR, Mechanical Front Rest if you have one, rear bag, enough ammo to shoot the match, sighters and rounds for score. Oh yeah and a happy face with a BIG SMILE. You'll see plenty of other accessories that shooters will be using, some you may need later as you get involved and some you will not need at all. Don't be afraid to ask questions, for this is how we all learn. Be safe and good luck.

Pickup a copy of the NRA Rule Book for High Power. F/ TR and F Open rules are covered in section 22, beginning on page 64 of my 2007 rule book.

I would start with with the 6br for the reasons above. You can not beat trigger time. You do not have to start out shooting 600 or longer ranges, you could start by shooting 300. Then move back the more comfortable you get. That is if there isnt anybody around you that could help you. Also spend your time looking on this site. It will cut the learning curve in half. There are tons of good articles on here. Spend that time and it will save you time and money. If you have any questions just ask. Lots of good fellas on here.

xdshooter - the main difference between the two clasess is the gear that is allowed to be used...I don't think one is better than the other to get started in...the best way to get started is to go to a comp and start competing....especially since you have chamberings suitable for either class.

A little encouragement for you - I am using my 6mmbr varminter in F-Open, I switched the bipod for a caldwell rest and a sinclair sled, found a wicked "target" load for the 95 berger vld and off I went. So far I have club level wins at 300, 500 and a 3rd at 900yrds. I can only go so far with this combo in F-Open as competing past 500 yrds against 7mms and 6.5x284s is really hard....but who cares, when I want to get serious I will look at Ftr or go down the 7mm path for F-Open.

Good luck
