Getting started 6brx

Hello, long time lurker first post. (Little background) I started reloading my own hunting rounds about twenty years ago on a friend's equipment. I caught the accuracy bug about 4 years ago and have had my own (constantly growing) equipment since. I've been shooting a local 600 yard f class league for last couple years with a 223 ai and 80 gr bullets. I've faired pretty well with it and learned alot but its time for a new gun, I'm tired of getting beat up by the 6's. So I'm in the process of putting together a 6brx. I'm hoping to get some advice from you all.
The gun will be used mainly for the local 600 yard f class but I really want to start shooting some 1000 yard matches this summer. Which is the reason I'm going BRX rather than a straight 6br.
I have everything in hand except the stock which I am currently waiting on. I have a couple hundred pieces of lupua brass that I'd like to start prepping while I wait. The reamer I'm using has a .272 no turn neck. I'm looking to do a light turn ( clean up) on the necks before I fire form.
My questions are.... Is it a good idea to turn them before forming or should i wait till after? Should I even worry about turning at all? I ordered a set of whidden 6brx dies, a FL bushing and a seater (my 1st bushing die). Having only BRX dies what will I need to properly prep the necks on the br brass for turning? Also will these dies with the proper bushing work for getting enough neck tension on the long br neck for the jam method of fire forming? I'd like to fire form using jam method rather than the false shoulder method if possible.

Here is what I do:

Turn to cleanup necks
Size to about .005-.007 neck tension
Load 30.0 gr Varget
.015 to .02 jam 105 Hybrids
Fire

You will need the high neck tension to hold the case back against the bolt face to prevent a misfire from the case jumping forward.

Be sure to bring a cleaning rod and some compressed air in case of a misfire and you have to pull a cartridge. The bullet may be left stuck in the lands and you will end up dumping powder in your action.

This is a very accurate load and feel free to compete in a tournament with it.

I use the false shoulder method to fireform cases. Neck up to 6.5 then size the neck part way down to 6mm, sized just enough so the bolt closes with just a little resistance. This makes a false shoulder. Load with either 105 Berger or 107 SMK over 30grs of Varget lit off by a CCI 450 primer. Shoot in midrange match (600yds) Very accurate. After second firing I neck turn just enough to clean up the necks.

Turn necks before you fire form
I turned all way down to 6BR shoulder so when you FF it then goes into shoulder, this will stop donuts happening later



this was done with the whidden BRX dies and .005 neck tension on the 6BR case before firing and seated .030 into lands, so yes you can use you BRX dies to get neck tension (i only did top half of neck )
and you can see they came out great
used 30gr or 2208/varget and i also used soft primers for fire forming only ..federal 205 to make sure i didnt get a misfire .. i use cci 450 once FF

Neck turn first. My gun smith did all my neck turning for me using the pumkin neck turner. Probably the finest neck turner out there.

I like to fire form softly. Using a faster powder and lighter bullets jammed about .012. That has kept split necks to 0 so far and keep the primer pockets tighter for about 50-100 reloads. Treat that Lapua brass right and you will wear out several guns before it wears out.

Starting load was 28gr of XBR with 68grbullets jammed hard .012 then another loadof 30gr of XBR with 68grbullets two more times brings the case to a good and cloas shape. Dont bump the shoulder back more then .001. Dont worry about barrel wear. These loads will do half the damage per shot that a 105gr under 30gr of Varget will do.

My cometition loads are with 95gr VLDs over H4350. Very good for working at 600y

Look up a John708 6BRX post from a few years back. It went on for over two years. It has more info on the BRX than you will find any where.

Having a 6BRX made for varmint hunting. Anyone have a case trim to length? Won't have the reamer for at least a month, asked for short freebore. I'll ask the gunsmith to measure the neck portion on the reamer. Assume I want about 0.020" than the neck on the reamer.
