Getting RF ammo tested in Ohio ?

It looks like my local club here in Western Pa. is going to start playing with casual RF-BR. I don't really know where it may or may not go, but knowing comp. minded shooters, I can see it getting good in the future.....With that being said.....I have an Annie MPR with the 2-stage trigger with the ( Very Nice ) Whidden 3" bag rider on the front & a Harrells tuner. I got the gun with a nice batch of Midas+ that is going to soon be gone.....Are this gun and set-up worth going forward with to get into any sort of 22lr BR so far as making the trip for ammo lot testing and significant purchase of it? OR, would smarter money be to take the dive down the RF rabbit hole and get a more purpose-built gun before messing with lot-testing, etc..........Any suggestions would be much appreciated........I DO know a little bit about SR-BR shooting with 6ppc & 30 Major...............Thanks

Best Regards

Hey, Rick, here’s my experience with the test center. The overnight trip to Marengo, Ohio and subsequent testing were absolutely worth the effort. Several lots of ammo were tested. We each bought a case of the best lot numbers for our rifles. Luke was quite generous with suggestions and sharing his expertise. The cost of having our rifles tested was absorbed when we ordered our cases of ammunition. I would definitely do it again for another rifle. Good luck.

If your club is starting casual BR, I would give it a try with what you have now before making a full investment in a purpose built BR rig. If you like the rifle as is for what your are using it for now, there is no "down side" to getting quality ammo for it via a trip to see Shane at the Merango test center. For us in western PA, it's a long but doable day trip.

After a few matches, if the bug bites you more you can start gathering the parts for a purpose built rig. That in itself can take some time along w/ what gunsmith you use, so a year to get a new BR rifle is not unheard of. In that time period, you still would have quality ammo matched to a rifle.

Guys at our club modified their MPRs with delrin rear bag riders on the heel of the stock in addition to their mods on the front so that they ride like their CF BR stocks.
With Midas +, on a IR 50/50, in good conditions, 246-248 with 15 ish Xs is pretty common. Guys shooting the MPRs have taken down 40Xs and Holeshots, numerous times, but the shooter matters also.

Last couple matches, 2/3 have been taken by a V22S, shooting 249 & 250 with 17&18 Xs. IIRC
In the right hands, with good ammo I think the MPR can be competitive. Get in a arms race with good shooters and it might become outclassed. JMO

Yeah, a few weeks ago on a Tues I shot my MPR for the 1st time with the supplied Midas+. I went back to the range 2 more times that week and entered a KYL match that Sunday. I only missed one target, a 3/4 in. swinger at 60yds on the 1st shot. I hit it the next 4 and won the match hitting the rest of the targets at varied ranges out to the 60yds with the 10x scope limit for the match......Off an Atlas and a soft rabbit-eared bag I had sitting on the shelf. The tuner/ammo combo works well and the Annie 2 stage is easy to work with.

I did a look around for the mentioned MPR Delrin bag rider with no luck.....Is there a place to access one of these or are they just made one-off by the owners?

Rick, one or more of those guys are machinist by trade. Think one of them made several for all the guys using MPR s. Really helpful and knowledgeable group of guys. Competitive but don’t let it get in the way of friendship.

Rick,

Where are you located? I’m in Pittsburgh and always looking for places to shoot.
