Getting JB Weld undone

I have a steel scope rail JB Welded onto my action. Now I have a new aluminium stock, my gun is over weight so I want to fit an aluminium scope rail to knock some weight off. Does anyone know how to get JB Weld undone? Will leaving a clothes iron on the rail to heat it up get JB weld undone like it does for epoxy?

Yep, JB can be softened with heat. The hot iron will work. One thing about JB is that it has a distinctive smell when it softens. That's when you get out the mallet. :

Or freeze it off. Drop action into the freezer overnight. I SHOULD snap off tomorrow. tap with a plastic hammer. Might sure there are no screws in it.

JB weld is great stuff,heat will work much better than cold. It takes sustained temps of around 600 deg. to start it breaking down. Im not sure your iron will go there. I once repiared the eng. block on a fork lift with it and it lasted many years before we junked it for another reason. Good Luck c

I'd use a propane torch. Play the inner flame cone back and forth along the rail when the action is in a vise or other clamp, then tap the end of the rail with a small hammer after six or seven 5-second passes.

The JB will act as kind of an insulator to keep the heat off the action but you still need to be prudent with the flame size to avoid overheating. An iron might work but the rate of heating will be considerably slower which may cause more heat to go to the action than with a torch.

If you have a way to soak the rail - while it's still attached - in something like Kroil overnight, you just might get it off with less heat.

OK, what I will try is the hot iron trick first (or buy a propane torch), using a chisel as a wedge between the rail and barrel. If that doesnt do the trick, I will try alternating hot irons and deep freezing. I only have a limited supply of kroil left, so I will be sparing with it, but might give it a few drops for good measure

If you have a pan you can put the action in and submerge the rail in lacquer thinner or acetone. without the the flame of course that may break it free. it may take a couple of hours and a whack with a soft hammer . T.R.
