Getting into Competition

I'am sure this has been asked dozens of times. I have always hunted and in the past two years competed in idpa and uspsa pistol shooting. I really would like to get into 22LR or BR shooting. Can anyone suggest the competition which i should look into first. Or what i should start out in? caliber? pros vs. cons? price to get into a certain type of shooting? Thanks

Best advice I can give is to try to find a match in your area, and observe what goes on. Most guys at a match will jump at the chance to help a new (to the game) shooter, and may loan you their equipment so that you can shoot in the match.
You can check the ibs website internationalbenchrest.com, or the nbrsa.com site for centerfire matches. If you go to www.benchrest.com there is a listing of the governing bodies of the centerfire and rimfire BR groups on the homepage.

As far as cost goes, the best thing I can advise is once you figure out which discipline you want to shoot get a used rifle with a good history, and shoot it until you feel that you are ready for your own. BR rifles will retain their value very well, and, if you decide not to continue you can sell it for close to what you paid for it. Most used guns are in the $1800-$2200 range...some less, some more depending on the equipment that comes with the deal. You may find someone who will sell you the dies, brass, and a few spare barrels as part of the package.

Hope this helps,
Mike
